Long Beach FD Strengthens SAR Capability

Shark Marine Technologies Inc. has delivered a Mako Diver Delivery System (DDS) to Long Beach Fire Department in California.    The Mako DDS will be used in conjunction with one of two Navigator systems already in use with the department. The Mako will allow the divers longer search periods, due to less physical demand on the divers, also enabling programmed searches of a defined area. This allows the diver to concentrate scanning the area around him/her for drowned victims while the Mako DDS follows the search pattern. The goal of the Navigator was to decrease the time to find targets on

reported, “We set up the SCAN-650 and found a target relatively quickly. A diver was splashed and confirmed it was the victim. The sonar was instrumental in helping make a fast recovery.”   Another sonar being used by many teams including the Alaska State Troopers, Louisville Fire Department in Kentucky and Bingham County Search and Rescue in Idaho is side scan. Instead of deploying the device from a stationary position like the SCAN-650, the side scan sonar is towed behind the boat and scans hundreds of feet of ocean, lake or river bottom with each pass of the vessel allowing a
