Unmanned Vessels Help to Protect Threatened Marine Lives in China

In April 2022, Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs) and passive acoustic monitoring technologies were used in China for the first time to monitor and investigate the population of Chinese White Dolphins that inhabit the National Nature Reserve in Pearl River Estuary of Guangdong.The Chinese White Dolphin, or Sousa Chinensis, is renowned as the "panda of the ocean." It was classed as "vulnerable" on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. China's Guangdong to Move Data Centers Undersea to Cut Power Use

China's Guangdong province, a major technology hub on the southeast coast, plans to move some of its big data centers to new sites undersea in a bid to cut energy use, according to plan published on Tuesday.Data centers have emerged as one of the biggest industrial consumers of energy. Building them underwater will reduce the need for cooling technology, which can account for around a third of a facility's total electricity consumption.Major cities such as Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhuhai will be encouraged to relocate "high energy consuming data centers" to underwater locations

"Bonny River" TSH Dredger Delivered

The trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Bonny River built at Royal IHC’s Chinese partner yard COSCO Guangdong Shipyard was recently delivered to the Belgian dredging company DEME.   The TSHD features a number of advance technologies, and is driven by controllable pitch propellers and transverse thrusters from Schottel. With a 15,000 cbm capacity, the vessel is capable of dredging hard soil and able to work in water depths of more than 100 m.“The design of the Bonny River is inspired by a drive to continuously innovate from an ecological and efficiency perspective,"

China's 'Smart' Ship Debuts in Shanghai

intelligent navigation system made its debut in Shanghai, according to official media Xinhua.   China Daily also reported that the world's first smart ship, developed and built by China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC),  has started its first trial voyage in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province.   Christened as 'Great Intelligence' (Great Smart) 179-meter-long ship  is 32-meters-wide and 15-meters-high, with a maximum loading capacity of 38,800 tonnes.    The report said that it is installed with SOMS, a China-Developed marine system with autonomous learning

CNPC, Guangdong Ink Deal on S. China Sea Methane Hydrate

China's Ministry of Land and Resources, state energy giant China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC) and Guangdong province have agreed to build a pilot methane hydrate project in the South China Sea, CNPC said its website on Monday.   The trial prospecting of the deep-sea gas resource, also known as "flammable ice", will be in the Shenhu area of the South China Sea, after initial tests run in May, CNPC said.   The report did not give further details on the timeline or financial investment on developing this pilot project. ECA Group to Deliver ROV for Dams Inspection in China

ECA Group said it will provide a H300 remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) to the Guangdong Research Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower, in China, to aid in inspections of hydro-electric dams and related power plant.   Hydraulic dams require inspection, and the use of ROVs help to permit ongoing survey, thus avoiding the emptying the upstream reservoir constraint.   Parts to be monitored and inspected are most frequently the dam wall itself, but also other specific parts like the spillway, the structures – also called "overflow channels" – used to
