Semtech, Wilhelmsen, TTI Team-up for Maritime IoT

use Semtech’s LoRa devices to help deliver what they describe as cost-effective, robust and proven IoT solutions to the maritime shipping industry.Wilhelmsen is a global maritime industry group founded in 1861. Semtech Corporation is a  supplier of high performance analog and mixed-signal semiconductors and advanced algorithms.Wilhelmsen has selected Semtech’s LoRa devices as the foundation for its new global 2.4GHz maritime IoT network to deliver an ecosystem of cost-effective, robust and proven IoT solutions for its diverse global customer base at “land and sea.”The global

Study: Electrical Properties of Topological Insulators

. The results of this research have been published in Nature Nanotechnology (see http://www.nature.com/nnano/index.html and the digital object identifier 10.1038/nnano.2014.16). Topological insulators constitute a new quantum phase of matter distinct from the classic dichotomy of simple metals and semiconductors. This phase was predicted in 2007 to exist in certain materials with high spin-orbit interaction, and confirmed a year later by spectroscopic measurements. While the bulk of a TI material is nominally an insulator, the surface layer (approximately one nanometer thick) is occupied by metallic

ABB Installs Powerful North Sea HVDC Wind Connector

, supply and installation of the offshore wind connection by TenneT, a leading European transmission system operator. The project scope includes the offshore converter station, the sea and land cable systems, and the onshore converter station. The system features the latest generation of ABB power semiconductors, with increased performance that ensures higher availability and lower losses. The DolWin 1 offshore wind connection is expected to avoid 3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year by replacing fossil-fuel based generation.

ABB HVDC Technology Aids Offshore Wind Power Transmission

our commitment to the ongoing development of this key technology,” said Hanspeter Faessler, Head of ABB’s Grid Systems business, a part of the company’s Power Systems division. “ABB is uniquely positioned in this sector with manufacturing capability for converters, cables and semiconductors - the major HVDC components.”
