UK-based Ocean Scientific International Ltd (OSIL) announced a new addition to their coring portfolio - a lightweight version of its Vibrocorer.

The lightweight vibrocorer is roughly half the weight of the high-power version, but retains sufficient structural strength and vibration force (30kN) to drive the barrel up to 6 meters into densely compacted sediments in up to 250 meters water depth, courtesy of the vibrating motor contained within the sealed pressure housing, OSIL said.

OSIL said its Vibrocorers have been designed as robust, easy to use and easy to transport modular systems which minimize dockside assembly for quicker mobilization and benefit from a simple deployment and recovery procedure, which suits its use on vessels of opportunity.

The system can either be assembled dockside or on the vessel itself into a 3 meter or a 6 meter system before deploying over the stern. The unit has been designed for straightforward horizontal recovery on to the vessel and effortless removal of the core barrel and sample once back on deck.
