Engaging Future Leaders for Ocean Technology

OceansAdvance Inc. (OA) the Ocean Technology Cluster of Newfoundland & Labrador, announced a  collaboration with the Oceans Learning Partnership (OLP) for “Into the Deep: Ocean Technology R&D and Commercialization for Youth” to be held on March 9, 2017  at the Johnson Geo Centre.

This one-day event will gather science students from schools in the St. John’s Metro Area and live video broadcasts to various school classrooms throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. Also participating in this initiative is Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador (MUN), SubC Imaging and Agile Sensor Technology, all members of the OA Cluster, who will provide presentations, tech demonstrations, and Q&A sessions throughout the day.

Mike Maguire, the newly reelected Director of OA and Chair for 2016-2017, indicated that engaging youth is key to securing continued growth for the OT sector in NL. Maguire said, “OceansAdvances’ partnerships with organizations like OLP and the academic community which encourage youth interest in the OT sector will contribute to sustained prosperity for the sector and the province.”

Maguire noted that ongoing government support from the Atlantic Canada Opportunity Agency and the provincial Department of Tourism, Culture, Industry, and Innovation plays a vital role in the success of the OT sector: “Considering the increase in provincial collaboration and partnerships, the recent infusion of $40m by the federal government in the Ocean Frontier Partnership at MUN, the development of the Atlantic Growth Strategy, and more; the OT sector continues to thrive and offers boundless opportunity to NL’s youth and future aspiring entrepreneurs.”
