Suppliers of bespoke coring systems OSIL (Ocean Scientific International Ltd.) have increased the maximum core sampling length of its Giant Piston Corer to 60 meters.

The move comes as a result of high demand from customers for the longer specification, the company explained. OSIL said it has seen considerable growth in interest in recent years for increasingly longer core samples, which has stemmed in part from the rising demand to explore and map deep-water subsea resources, and can only be achieved satisfactorily with a Giant Piston Corer.

The Giant Piston Corer is a system capable of achieving 60-meter core samples in soft cohesive sediment and mud owing to its modular construction and integral piston, which reduces internal friction and prevents plugging.

Ocean Scientific International Ltd. noted it can pair the system with a variety of different handling systems to suit the existing vessel layout, equipment and available deck space. The corer can be manufactured from carbon steel or stainless steel.
