Unique Supports Hydrographic Project for Bayanat
A division of Unique Maritime Group (UMG), an integrated turnkey subsea and offshore solutions provider, Unique System FZE has recently supported a hydrographic project that included the installation of Kongsberg’s EM 2040 multibeam echo sounder units for Bayanat for Mapping & Surveying Services (Bayanat) in two different vessels at Abu Dhabi. Bayanat is a wholly-owned Mubadala company that was born from the commercialization of the UAE Armed Forces Military Survey Department (MSD).

Severn Telemetry and Control for Wave Power Device
Severn Subsea Technologies, part of the Severn Glocon Group, has developed an integrated telemetry and control system for wave power company Seatricity’s Oceanus 2 wave device, now moored at the Cornish Wave Hub. The SST system will enable researchers to correlate wave movement with power generated, and thus optimize power generating conditions offshore. Seatricity wave energy generation is based on a float tethered to the seabed via a pump.

HYPACK Used at Texas A&M Nautical Archaeology Program
As part of HYPACK’s academic initiative to promote and encourage training and education, HYPACK, Inc. was involved in the Remote Sensing Survey Workshop 2014 which is part of Nautical Archaeology Program at Texas A&M University. Several graduate students from the Nautical Archaeology Program, and undergraduate students from Texas A&M Galveston attended the seminar and were able to gain experience in HYPACK for their study.

Bellingham Named Director of WHOI Robotics Center
The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) has appointed James Bellingham as the first director of its Center for Marine Robotics. Bellingham will come to WHOI in early fall 2014 from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), where he was director of engineering and most recently chief technologist. Bellingham earned his PhD from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he was founder and manager of the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Laboratory.

UK Divers Fined for Undeclared Shipwreck Raids
In a landmark case, two divers today have been made to pay a total of £63,500 in fines and costs for not declaring valuable items from shipwrecks off the U.K. coast. David Knight and Edward Huzzey, both from Sandgate, had previously pleaded guilty to 19 offences between them, contrary to section 236 and section 237 of the Merchant Shipping Act 1995. Knight was fined £7,000 and Huzzey £6,500. They were each ordered to pay £25,000 in costs.

Market Improving for German Equipment Suppliers
The German Engineering Federation (VDMA) reported a good order situation for German marine and offshore oil and gas equipment suppliers, but the upsurge in incoming orders is not making the sector euphoric. “The boom in world ship newbuilding orders in 2013 gave us strong order growth, particularly from China and Korea. Here our ongoing export commitment in the global market is paying off: Germany remains the leading country for marine equipment suppliers worldwide.

EMAS AMC Installs 50 Platforms for Chevron
EMAS AMC, the subsea services division of EMAS, a global offshore contractor and provider of integrated offshore solutions to the oil and gas industry has achieved the milestone of installing 50 platforms for Chevron in the Gulf of Thailand. Under a multiyear contract that commenced in 2011, EMAS AMC has also laid 376km of subsea pipes utilizing the construction vessel Lewek Champion, a DP2 rigid pipe laying vessel with heavy lift capabilities.

DSM Expands into Egypt with Maersk Drilling
Deep Sea Mooring (DSM) has won the contract to provide a range of mooring services to Maersk Drilling for its sixth generation, semi-submersible drilling rig Maersk Discoverer. DSM will now design, engineer and install the mooring system for the rig. “This is the first time we’ve worked with Maersk Drilling and the first time we’ve undertaken operations in Egypt,” commented Åge Straume, CEO of Deep Sea Mooring.

Dead Sharks Found in Illegal Gill Net
U.S. Coast Guard crews in South Texas located and recovered a gill net near the Mexico-U.S. maritime border with 65 deceased sharks. At approximately 2 p.m. on Monday during a routine patrol, an aircrew aboard an HU-25 Falcon airplane spotted floating fishing gear approximately 20 miles off South Padre Island and 37 miles north of the U.S./Mexico maritime border. Coast Guard Sector Corpus Christi immediately diverted the Coast Guard Cutter Amberjack, an 87-foot coastal patrol boat.

SCHOTTEL Tidal Generators Push Renewable Energy
The Canadian SCHOTTEL subsidiary Black Rock Tidal Power Inc. (BRTP) has recently won a demonstration berth in the Bay of Fundy, known for its high tidal range. BRTP will install SCHOTTEL tidal generators (STG) on a Triton platform developed by Tidal Stream Ltd. in which SCHOTTEL holds shares. The device will be readily installed in spring 2016 with initially 16 STG turbines (1.1 MW capacity), stepping up to the full capacity of 2.5 MW using 36 STG turbines in early 2017.

Van Oord Cable-layer Launched by Damen
Van Oord’s new DP2 cable-laying vessel, Nexus, was officially launched at Damen Shipyards Galati on June 30. The 123 m multipurpose vessel will be deployed installing electricity cables for offshore wind farms. The international contractor for dredging, marine engineering and offshore energy projects has made the investment in this vessel to pursue its strategy to offer Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contracts to offshore wind farm developers.

Bill Introduced to Assess Great Lakes Marine Sanctuaries
Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., co-chair of the Senate Great Lakes Task Force, and four colleagues introduced legislation requiring a federal assessment of Great Lakes waters with significant cultural, historic or archaeological value for possible preservation as federal marine sanctuaries. The Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Assessment Act would direct the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to submit to Congress a report and recommendations on possible Great Lakes sanctuaries.

MacArtney Supplies ROTV for CSIRO
MacArtney has supplied a TRIAXUS remotely operated towed underwater vehicle (ROTV) to the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), Australia's national science agency. The TRIAXUS underwater vehicle will be utilized on Australia’s Marine National Facility research vessel, the Investigator. This instrument will be used in a diverse range of oceanographic research activities.

CARIS 2014 Focuses on Blue Economy Development
CARIS held its 15th international user group conference in Brest, France during the week of June 2-5, 2014. CARIS 2014, which brought together CARIS users from all over the world, was the largest user conference to-date with approximately 170 delegates from 25 different countries and more than 75 organizations in attendance. Delegates were engaged in boot camps and user group meetings during the first two days of the conference.

Shark Gulps Subsea Camera in Single Bite
News has just surfaced of a great white shark attacking scuba gear produced by 360Heros, a company based in Olean, N.Y. specializing in the production of 360-degree camera arrays. The incident took place while divers were filming off the coast of New Zealand for The Discovery Channel’s Shark Week. What was intended to be the first-ever 360 video footage of sharks quickly sunk along with thousands of dollars in 360Heros’ equipment.
