Requirements and Essential Skills :

  • Licensed US Coast Guard engine license, Steam & Diesel with sailing experience under this license.  First Assistant or Chief Engineer license preferred.
  • Professional trained marine engineer from either a State or Federal Maritime Academy, or from a reputable trade school.
  • Licensed engineer employment history should include a broad base of ship repair, new construction, and steam and diesel propulsion and electrical/automation experience.  
  • The incumbent is expected to have specific knowledge, training and experience in 
    1. All aspects of marine maintenance and repair.
    2. Understand of planned maintenance routines
    3. Operation of  slow and medium speed diesel engines
    4. Operations of diesel power plant auxiliaries
    5. Operation of high-pressure boilers, steam turbines, steam plant auxiliaries
    6. Operation of reefer, diesel load management systems, electrical and automated systems.
  • The incumbent must be familiar with budget management and control.
  • Advanced Excel, Word, Outlook, NS-5, Microsoft Project
  • Strong oral and written abilities. The incumbent communicates effectively with design consultants, representatives of the regulatory and classification bodies, ship crews, and company personnel.  Proven administration and management capabilities are required including the willingness and capability to train vessel personnel
  • Good presentation and teaching skills before large groups

 

Other Skills and Experiences preferred but not required:

  • Containership experinece, preferrable on Matson liner vessels
  • Design experience in marine engineering systems including electrical and automation
  • AutoCAD drafting skills
  • State or Federal maritime academy graduate with a BS Marine Engineering
  • Post Graduate studies in Business, Finance and Accounting
Description

The Manager, Fleet Maintenance China reports to the Director, Vessel Operations and Engineering.  The position is responsible for all voyage maintenance and repair (M&R) of the vessels to include main propulsion, auxiliary equipment, hull equipment, deck machinery, safety systems, navigational and communication system, galley and hotel equipment, as well as all other aspects of M&R related to vessels owned or operated by the company in the China Trade Lanes.

This position will prepare all required financial data for presentation to management, covering accurate cost estimates for voyage repairs, operation, and repair projects including a time line for successful completion.  This includes fuel consumption estimates for operating plan budgets and special projects or new business.

The position supervises contracts for all non-shipyard ship modifications and M&R, including negotiation of any changes to contract work specifications, control of budgets, on-site inspections, and preparation of specifications to be used to solicit bids.

This individual is responsible for the supervision of the Senior Port Engineer and his team to assure compliance with the collective bargaining agreement and comp time hour reporting.  This position also provides technical guidance to the Port Engineers and all Chief Engineers on day to day and on emergency repairs.

This position will work closely with the  Director, Vessel Operations & Engineering, Director, Marine Engineering & Special Projects, Vessel Managers, the Director, Performance Monitoring & Technical Engineering, as well as with the Vice President and Manager of Fleet Operations in order to integrate, coordinate, and successfully achieve operational and maintenance objectives.

This position is based in Oakland, CA but will require travel on an as-needed basis.
