Vernadsky Medal for Boetius
The AWI director, deep-sea researcher and Max Planck group leader Prof. Dr. med. Antje Boetius receives the Vernadsky Medal for her seminal contributions in the field of biogeosciences and her outstanding research on methane metabolism and the marine carbon cycle. The Vladimir Ivanovich Vernadsky Medal has been awarded by the European Geosciences Union (EGU) since 2003 in recognition of the scientific achievements of Vernadsky in mineralogy and geochemistry. It honors scientists for their exceptional contributions in the field of biogeosciences. Antje Boetius is the first female award winner.
Adventure Under Ice
has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the James Family Foundation, and the George Frederick Jewett Foundation East. The team’s participation in the 2014 Polarstern expedition was made possible by the support of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, chief scientist Antje Boetius, and the captain and crew of Polarstern PS86. Among the many current or planned capabilities for Nereid will be high-definition cameras and powerful lighting to illuminate the ice surface where the all-important algae cling. These are the very base of the food web. Nereid will eventually boast
