Chinese Submarine Dives into Indian Ocean

top scientist, Tao Chunhui, said. The data will play a significant role in China's future research on polymetallic sulfide, Tao added. Different metals become sulfides after chemical reactions and come to rest in the seabed in "chimney vents".   The Chinese submersible vessel is called Jiaolong, a name inspired from a mythical dragon. China has also tested a remote-controlled underwater vehicle, Longzhu.

China to Step Up Ocean Research as Russia Cuts Arctic Budget

China will step up the building of research vessels including polar icebreakers, mother ships for manned submersibles and comprehensive research vessels reports Xinhua, while Russia's Ministry of Finance has refused to pay for Arctic research according to news on the official website Arctic-Info. Jiaolong, China's first manned deep-sea submersible, is scheduled for oceanic research in the southwest Indian Ocean and the northwest Pacific Ocean in 2014, the State Oceanic Administration (SOA) informed Xinhua at a national maritime work conference. Xinhua cites Liu Cigui, head of the SOA, as saying

China to Build 4,500m Manned Submersible

carrying out scientific research. The program was revealed by Hu Zhen with China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, who is in charge of the technology development of the submersible program under the Ministry of Science and Technology, in an interview on board the Xiangyanghong 09, carrier boat of the Jiaolong submersible. According to the news agency, Jiaolong has dived successfully to a depth of 7,062m. According to the report the Jiaolong will soon be handed over to the China Ocean Mineral Resources Research and Development Association, and at that time study will focus on key technologies involved

China Manned Submersible Samples Mineral Deposits

China's manned submersible Jiaolong discovers extensive iron-manganese deposits subsea South China Sea. "The Jiaolong began to dive at 9 a.m. Wednesday and arrived at its scheduled depth about 110 minutes later. We sailed northwest, climbed a forty-meter-high slope and found a large deposit of iron-manganese," said Tang Jialing, pilot of the submersible and a researcher from the National Deep Sea Center. Eight samples were taken from these deposits. "Since one of the samples was broken by the sub's robotic arm, a round core inside could be identified as volcanic lava. The materials

Oceanology International China Keynote Address Confirmed

two keynote speakers who share a practical interest in hadal zone exploration. In 1960 Don Walsh, with Jacques Piccard, dived in Trieste to the deepest place in the world ocean – 35,840 ft in the Mariana Trench, and his interest continues to this day, and Professor Cui is involved with the current Jiaolong deep manned submersible project. In Dr Montaron we have a speaker who will impress on our audience the key role oceanology plays in offshore oil and gas exploration and production. “The conference is free to attend for all involved with marine technology and ocean science who, we are confident

China Submersible Sets to Sea

China's manned submersible 'Jiaolong', aboard its support ship 'Xiangyanghong-9', leaves Jiangyin on a marine science expedition. During the 103-day mission, the submersible will submerge for scientific research in the South China Sea, the northeast Pacific Ocean and the west Pacific. Jiaolong set a new dive record after reaching 7,062 meters deep in the Pacific Ocean's Mariana Trench in June 2012, demonstrating China's ability to conduct deep-sea scientific research and resource exploration in 99.8 percent of the world's oceans. However, Jiaolong is not yet ready for regular operation, according
