RIMPAC, the Rim of the Pacific Exercise is the world’s largest international maritime warfare exercise. RIMPAC is held during June and July in Honolulu, Hawaii. With RIMPAC the United States Pacific Command seeks to enhance interoperability between Pacific Rim armed forces, as a means of promoting stability in the region to the benefit of all participating nations. The Pacific faces several potential conflicts, which the United States Department of Defense believes may require naval force-on-force engagements. These include the possibility of the Peoples Republic of China invading Taiwan in the event of its declaration of independence, North Korean aggression toward South Korea, the US, and Japan. This year SeaBotix collaborated with the Canadian Navy to create a unique training opportunity using the SeaBotix vLBV. Several operations were conducted including the deployment of the vLBV950 equipped with the Tritech Gemini 720i multibeam sonar, the Micron Nav USBL positioning system, and grabber. During the exercise the SeaBotix/Canadian Navy team was able to identify unknown targets supplied by a wide area AUV search. SeaBotix works with the US Navy as well as other Navies throughout the world. RIMPAC was the first time SeaBotix had been involved with the Canadian Navy during a major exercise. "We are very excited about what we have achieved as part of this exercise," said Sean Newsome, SeaBotix Global Business Development Manager, "The challenging scenarios allowed SeaBotix and the Canadian Navy to develop new ideas for our products while we continue to develop our relationship with one of our important customers.” SeaBotix will continue to work closely with the Canadian Navy to get feedback about ways to optimize the technology as man and machine work together in some of the most demanding environments in the world - in the oceans surrounding Canada. "Watching the SeaBotix and Canadian teams work together and overcome unforeseen issues while developing new innovative ideas about how SeaBotix products can better support our Navy and her allies is very exciting to me.” said Newsome.
