to build a resident underwater vehicle docking station with integrated battery for offshore wind applications.”Verlume’s intelligent energy management system, Axonn, can deliver a constant output of power from renewable sources to support offshore decarbonization projects and minimize energy loss from electricity generated from offshore wind.Power management system advancements are key, but Verlume’s CTO, Paul Slorach, says the company is also continually improving the energy density of its systems. Most recently, that has involved a new module design, but he is also keeping an eye

Underwater PBCF Installation in South Korea

Last month Hydrex installed Propeller Boss Cap Fins (PBCF) on a 289-meter tanker during the vessel’s stop in Mokpo, South Korea. A Propeller Boss Cap Fins (PBCF) can recover energy loss of a propeller hub vortex in the propeller’s backward flow. This decreases fuel consumption by 5% when operating at the same speed, or boosts speed by 2% with the same fuel consumption. A clear explanation of the benefits of installing a PBCF can be found here. By performing the operation on-site and underwater, the tanker’s owner could immediately benefit from the system’s fuel savings.

The compressor module was lifted into place by Saipem 7000, one of the world's largest heavy lift vessels.

. Five cables, each totaling about 70 kilometers, were laid between Kollsnes and the platform. Four of these cables are direct current (DC) and were installed in pairs. “A transformer station has been constructed at Kollsnes which converts alternating current into direct current to reduce energy loss when the electricity is transported over long distances. On Troll A, the direct current is converted back into alternating current,” says marine installation manager Tom R. Guttormsen. The final cable is an alternating current cable with fiber optics which will back up existing power

Underwater PBCF Installations Bring Fuel Savings

operation, the ships will not have to wait for their next drydock visit to start benefitting from the fuel savings the PBCF’s will bring them. The Propeller Boss Cap Fins (PBCF) is a device for propeller efficiency improvement developed by Mitsui O. S. K. Lines, Ltd. The PBCF can recover energy loss of a propeller hub vortex in the propeller’s backward flow. This decreases fuel consumption by 5% when operating at the same speed, or boosts speed by 2% with the same fuel consumption. The 5% energy saving effect has been verified by world research institutes including International
