Kongsberg to Market Two New Underwater Gliders

Kongsberg Underwater Technology, Inc. announced it has completed negotiations with CoMotion, the University of Washington’s collaborative innovation hub, to obtain the sole rights to produce, market and continue development of two new underwater glider systems.   Ocean gliders are a specialized type of autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). Rather than using a propeller to move through the water, they use fixed wings and changes in buoyancy to achieve both vertical and forward motion. The vehicles move through the water in a saw-tooth trajectory and surface periodically to communicate data

and telemetry systems with mobile data platforms such as the Seaglider enable us to offer specific mission configuration options for our clients, who have requirements such as marine mammal detection, maritime surveillance and dredge plume monitoring.”  Rich Patterson, GM Underwater Glider Systems for Kongsberg Underwater Technology, Inc. added “Kongsberg is very excited to have Fastwave represent Seaglider in Australia.  We have a mature and effective system that is poised to become an excellent tool for the maritime community, and we feel that Fastwave is the right partner

Kongsberg Seaglider is also the first vehicle from the new Kongsberg Maritime business unit, Underwater Glider Systems. Based on proven, original glider technology, Kongsberg Seaglider is a comparatively low-cost, very long endurance AUV that is capable of deployment durations in excess of nine months. The technology uses changes in buoyancy for thrust, which combined with an extremely hydrodynamic shape
