Mariner

Description

Dear Hiring Manager-
Thank you for your consideration and taking the time to review the material.
My family has a long, proud history in the New York Maritime industry, and all my life I
have wanted to work on Tugboats, eventually become a Pilot, and add to that proud family
tradition. This passion, rather than any passive interest, was really fostered by my mother
and her mother, who regaled me with stories about the Carroll’s and the “Fighting
Gillen’s.”
Both sides of my mother’s maternal family were in the Tugboat business in Brooklyn, New
York for a combined total of about 230 years. They all began as longshoreman and
Deckhands, working their way up to Tug Pilots. In 1865, Henry Gillen's sons Lighterage,
Inc. began running lighters and later Tugboats out of Newtown Creek in Greenpoint
with a headquarters out of the family home on India Street. Harry Gillen later incorporated
in 1912 and was in business until 1993 with an office on Pearl Street in Lower
Manhattan.
Carroll Towing Company was founded by Captain John Carroll in 1882. In the early years
of the company, Carroll partnered with John Wolfe Ambrose, an Irish Real Estate
Speculator from Manhattan, and his neighbor from Woodhull Street, William Moses “W.M.” Tebo, a French Canadian Engineer and dredger who went on to become a millionaire Philanthropist and owner of the Tebo Yacht Basin in Brooklyn. Employing their individual
talents and skillsets, these three men developed the Brooklyn waterfront and shipping
Industry from Brooklyn Heights to Red Hook. John Carroll’s son William Arthur Carroll
went on to become the youngest Tugboat Pilot in New York Harbor at 28 years old.
The Carroll’s also initially operated out of family residences on Woodhull and Carroll
Streets in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn; the family is directly related to Charles Carroll of
Carrollton who was the only Irish Catholic Signatory of the Declaration of independence
and where Carroll Gardens, Carroll Street and Carroll Park take their names. Later on as
the business grew, the family ran tugs out of Pier 5, Bush Terminal and had offices at
17 Battery Place New York, NY 10004 until the 1980’s.
As you can see, the Tugboat industry and working as a mariner is in my blood. All I want to
do is continue my family tradition, pursuing and furthering a career on the waterfront for
myself and my kin, keeping the Gillen and Carroll family names alive in the annals of time
and maritime history.
Sincerely,

Resume
