AquaSonic: The Underwater Symphony Captured by Teledyne Marine Hydrophones
Teledyne Marine has partnered with BetweenMusic, a Danish performance company, to create a unique concert experience that fuses art and technology. Led by musicians Leila Skovmand and Robert Karlsson, BetweenMusic has captivated audiences worldwide with their underwater concert experience known as AquaSonic.
AquaSonic is performed on stage with five performers submerged in glass water tanks, playing custom-made instruments and singing entirely underwater. This innovative approach to music performance requires specialized equipment to capture the unique sounds produced in this environment. Teledyne Marine's hydrophones have become an integral part of AquaSonic's success, providing the precision and clarity needed to capture the intricate notes of this new medium for sound.

A Decade-Long Collaboration
The collaboration between Teledyne Marine and BetweenMusic began over a decade ago, with the goal of creating an ethereal musical experience. Through interdisciplinary collaboration with craftsmen, artists, scientists, and divers, BetweenMusic was able to fabricate custom-made instruments for their underwater performances. When it came to capturing the efforts of their decade-long journey, they chose Teledyne Marine hydrophones for their optimal performance.

Capturing the Challenges of Sound Underwater
Creating music in the underwater environment has presented numerous challenges. Water absorbs high frequencies more readily than air, making it difficult to achieve the desired sound quality. Teledyne hydrophones became crucial in overcoming this challenge for both live performances and album recordings.
Robert Karlsson, BetweenMusic's musician and director, explained: “When we had the Teledyne hydrophone, it was like we could hear all these sparkling high frequencies, and that was quite amazing.”

Recording the Underwater World
The exceptional performance of Teledyne Marine’s hydrophones has become a cornerstone of AquaSonic's success. The team used Teledyne hydrophones exclusively to record their album, capturing the fascinating reverbs and echoes that occur underwater. Laila Skovmand, BetweenMusic's artistic director and lead singer, described the experience of recording underwater: “You hear it so clearly. Recording these fascinating reverbs and echoes that happen underwater was mind-blowing.”
Although AquaSonic currently performs on stage, they hope to perform in open water in the future. Their work recording reverberations using Teledyne hydrophones in the ocean environment has inspired them to explore new possibilities. Robert Karlsson described the experience: “By listening to the sound bouncing off rocks and to the surface of the water, you can start to imagine how this landscape is. It was amazing. It was otherworldly somehow.”
A Testament to Innovation
The partnership between Teledyne Marine and BetweenMusic is a testament to the power of innovation and collaboration in merging artistic vision with cutting-edge technology. AquaSonic offers audiences a magical auditory journey, capturing the intricate notes of a new medium for sound. Their innovative approach has attracted international audiences and inspired further collaborations with scientists and engineers. They are preparing to release their first album recorded with Teledyne Marine’s hydrophones sometime in 2025.
