Search Continues for Lost 1914 Submarine

Navy Minehunter, HMAS Yarra, has been undertaking an underwater search off Papua New Guinea for HMAS AE1, the Navy’s first submarine. AE1 was lost without a trace on September 14, 1914, with her full crew of three officers and 32 sailors. The Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Tim Barrett AO, CSC RAN, said the search had been ongoing for many years, and Yarra’s crew was up to the task: “The full expertise and training of the crew will be brought to bear in aid of the search. Fire Injures One aboard Australian Navy Submarine

was discovered to have extinguished itself. One ASC contractor suffered light burns to his face and hands and was taken to hospital for treatment. No other personnel onboard were affected and initial indications are the submarine has not been affected. The Chief of Navy Vice Admiral Ray Griggs, AO, CSC, RAN praised the professionalism of all involved. “The professional and quick actions of all involved is a reflection on their skills and training,” he said. RAN Reports Successful Torpedo Firing

The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) has successfully conducted the world’s first firing of a “war shot” MU90 Lightweight Torpedo, Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Ray Griggs AO CSC RAN announced today. Keppel to Build $800 Million Semisubmersible

Keppel Offshore & Marine Ltd. (Keppel O&M) through its subsidiaries Caspian Rigbuilders BV (an affiliated company of Keppel FELS) and Caspian Shipyard Company (CSC), has secured a contract from Caspian Drilling Company Ltd., a subsidiary of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR), to build a semisubmersible drilling rig, which includes owner furnished equipment, worth about $800 million.   Scheduled for delivery in 4Q 2016, the rig will be built to Keppel FELS' proprietary DSSTM 38M design, which has been customised for the Caspian Sea's harsh environment condition.
