Decarbonization: Geothermal Study Launched to Repurpose Old North Sea Wells

Petrofac, an international service provider to the energy industry, will be supporting deep geothermal specialist CeraPhi Energy in what has been described as a first-of-a-kind geothermal study looking at the repurposing of oil and gas wells using CeraPhi’s technology. The study, supported by the Net Zero Technology Centre in Aberdeen, will cover the initial phase of a staged process to determine how retrofitted wells can reduce the carbon footprint of an operating platform. The study will use EnQuest’s Magnus platform in the UK North Sea as the base case, for which Petrofac is also an

Partners Find a New Way to Detect Well leaks

Project partners in the UK are working to develop a new approach for monitoring the long-term integrity of suspended or decommissioned oil and gas wells in the North Sea. Their proposed technique aims to act as a "smoke alarm for the sea" to provide early warning in the event of a leak. The North Sea is currently home to approximately 11,000 oil and gas wells with 2,379 expected to be decommissioned over the next 10 years, according to Oil & Gas UK’s Decommissioning Insight Report. Suspended wells must be inspected; however, this is neither continuous nor frequent, and there

Transocean Signs 11 Well Contract with Chevron Australia

The international provider of offshore contract drilling services for oil and gas wells Transocean announced that the ultra-deepwater semisubmersible GSF Development Driller I was awarded an 11-well contract (approximately 955 days) commencing offshore Australia in the first half of 2019 with Chevron Australia. The estimated firm contract backlog, excluding integrated services, is approximately USD 158 million. Additionally, the contract includes four one-well options. Two days ago, Transocean announced that the midwater semisubmersible Transocean 712 was awarded a 13-well contract (approximately 580

Mexico's Oil Reform a Boon for Hard-hit Oil Service, Seismic Firms

areas where they are considered strong.   "Pemex has had to give up a lot to make the reform work," said Luis Vierma, exploration and production consultant and former vice-president of Venezuela's PDVSA.   The CNH has said the data, which includes information from 30,000 oil and gas wells, belongs to the country, not Pemex.   For Pena Nieto's government, the stakes are high. Energy reform was one of its top economic priorities, and the administration wants to show progress ahead of a presidential election in July.   Mexico faces stiff competition from other Latin American

Emerson Launches Salinity Measurement System

Meter and is based on microwave (MW) resonance technology, provides quantitative and qualitative real-time salinity measurements in many types of field conditions but, particularly, in the high gas volume fraction (GVF)/wet gas flows that characterize wet gas fields.    “With oil and gas wells being produced over a broader range of process conditions and water salinity and conductivity a key operational parameter for reservoir management and flow assurance, the timing for our new salinity system couldn’t be better,” said Patrick Babka, Vice President and General Manager Roxar

improvements and hydrologic restoration across the Gulf, which will provide direct benefits to millions of migratory birds and hundreds of federally-listed, at-risk species that call the Gulf home.   Additional proposed projects include: important restoration work to plug 11 abandoned oil and gas wells, backfill more than 16 miles of abandoned oil and gas canals, establish minimum monitoring and data standards for restoration work and develop conservation planning tools to assist in the identification and evaluation of future land conservation proposals in the Gulf Coast region.   Interior
