ICS Supports GOC Environmental Objectives
Proposals to protect the world’s oceans have been welcomed by the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), principal trade association for merchant shipowners. ICS advises that the Global Ocean Commission’s (GOC) ideas should be taken seriously. The GOC seeks a greater level of environmental protection, primarily in areas that involve economic activity, other than shipping, that may currently lack adequate regulation. The health of the global ocean is in decline and an integrated rescue package needs to be applied over the next five years, according to The Global Ocean Commission, made up of former Heads of State, Government, ministers and prominent business leaders. The Commission has spent 18 months investigating the decline of the global ocean and developed a rescue package of eight proposals to restore and protect its natural capital and services.
