Scientists Find Micro Plastic in Arctic Ice

we look at it up close and we see that it’s all very, very visibly contaminated when you look at it with the right tools -- it felt a little bit like a punch in the gut,” Strock told Reuters by telephone on Wednesday.Strock and his colleagues found the material trapped in ice taken from Lancaster Sound, an isolated stretch of water in the Canadian Arctic, which they had assumed might be relatively sheltered from drifting plastic pollution. The team drew 18 ice cores of up to 2 meters (6.5 feet) long from four locations and saw visible plastic beads and filaments of various shapes and sizes

Coral 'Bright Spots' Offer Clues to Protecting Threatened Reefs

; Another factor was that reefs with dark spots had recently suffered an environmental shock, such as from a cyclone or from a rise in water temperatures that can bleach reefs.   "We can learn things from the bright spots about what to encourage," co-author Professor Nicholas Graham of Lancaster University told Reuters.   The authors stressed that bright spots were not those with most fish, but were outperforming expectations judged against baselines such as the size of local populations, tourism, and whether or not reefs were in a marine reserve.   Cinner said the study

, one glacier, the Jakobshaven glacier, is the most productive. The icebergs, some weighing millions of tons, calve off glaciers flowing into Jakobshaven fjord and then drift out into Baffin Bay. “They start heading northwards because that is the way the current flows and then when get around the Lancaster Sound area they basically hang a left and go west and start down Baffin Bay past the Labrador Coast and then to the Grand Banks,” said Riggs. Their size is reduced considerably subject to melting in the water but can still be quite large when they reach the Grand Banks. “Even the small
