Bureau Veritas: New Rules for Diving Systems

Leading international classification society Bureau Veritas has issued a new Rule Note covering the Classification of Diving Systems, NR610, which sets out requirements for the classification of professional diving systems ranging from surface-supplied systems for shallow water diving to complex saturation systems for deep sea diving. Although diving is considered as one of the more hazardous offshore activities, demand for diving services from the oil and gas industry as well as the emerging marine renewable energy sector remains strong, despite progress made by the use of underwater remotely operated

ultimate objective is that ‘every HRU will be able to mate with every DSV or HRF of any class anywhere in the world’.   “We recognize that this particular objective might not be met for 30 years or more, until non-IMCA D 051 compatible diving support vessels (DSVs), mobile saturation systems on vessels and/or barges; and hyperbaric reception facilities (HRFs) in use today have reached the end of their service life, but now is the time to plan for an ever-safer future.”

, launch and recovery system, triple lock decompression chamber, an air/mixed gas dive control and hyperbaric rescue craft. The TUP Diving System doubles the workable bottom time when compared with traditional air diving options, N-Sea said, making the system cost efficient. When compared with saturation systems, the TUP Diving System can be a cost competitive alternative for operations between 35 and 50 m water depth, the company added. The most important factor to consider is safety. With divers being transferred under pressure the surface decompression interval is removed. The TUP Diving System

affectionately referred to as Moose Creek. We put the thing together, sorted out a bunch of things wrong with it and then did some saturation dives and trials. We hit 1,010 feet. That was the world record at that time. Another first.     Yes. So following the Navy I started Saturation Systems Inc. with Chris DeLucchi. One of the things we did early on was a dive on the Andria Doria. This was the first commercial saturation dive of a salvage operation ever. That must have been quite the feat in those early days.     It was. When we did the dive on the Andria Doria
