Missing Titanic Submersible Update: Searchers Detect Subsea Sounds

Search teams detected underwater sounds while scanning the North Atlantic for a tourist submersible that vanished with five people aboard during a deep-sea voyage to the century-old wreck of the Titanic, the U.S. Coast Guard said early on Wednesday. The detection of the sounds by Canadian aircraft on Tuesday, day three of the search, was reported by the Coast Guard as the clock ticked down to the last 24 hours of the missing craft's presumed oxygen supply.Robotic undersea search operations were diverted to the area where the sounds seemed to originate, but there was still no tangible sign of the

ocean still remains unknown to us. “It's the last frontier," Delgado stated. "We know more about the surface of the moon than what's at the bottom of the sea."That is where JW Fishers enters the story. Fishers’ equipment is in use by police, military, fire rescue and search teams across the globe, and it is this same equipment that treasure hunters often choose as their detector of choice: the Pulse 8X underwater metal detector. This award-winning underwater metal detector has been in use by for over 25 years by professionals all across the globe.(Photo courtesy JW Fishers)Nels

Missing Submarine Found Broken Up, 53 Dead

Sunday that a ROV (remotely operated vehicle) sent by the Singapore Navy was able to "recover a few critical items from the seabed at depth of more than 800 meters""We hope that this will help the families find some closure and certainty on the fate of their loved ones," he added.Search teams said on Saturday they had found objects including prayer mat fragments near the submarine's last known location, leading the navy to believe the vessel had cracked.Indonesia police said it would deploy teams to Bali and the Java town of Banyuwangi, which hosts the naval base from where the

how many were aboard when the vessel sank on Monday in bad weather, since it did not have a manifest. Four were confirmed dead and 18 survivors picked up, but officials fear the death toll could be much higher.Tearful relatives waiting for news gathered at the small port of Tigaras on Lake Toba. Search teams expect to find many more trapped victims once they know where the vessel came to rest in the lake, which is 450 m (1,500 feet) deep."We have the coordinates from when it sank, but we need to verify them," said Budiawan, a search and rescue official.A team of 25 divers, including marines

west coast of Ireland, Sonardyne Scout USBL (Ultra-Short BaseLine) and ROV-Homer acoustic tracking and relocation systems, owned and operated by the country’s Marine Institute, had detected emergency signals being transmitted from the aircraft’s flight data recorder (FDR). Using an ROV, search teams were subsequently able to pinpoint the exact location of the wreck which was lying in 40 meters of water.    Rescue 116, a Sikorsky S92 search and rescue helicopter operated by Canadian Helicopter corporation (CHC) on behalf of the Irish Coast Guard, disappeared from radar screens

Sonar Systems Help Search Teams, Scientists and Salvors

A variety of sonar systems are now being used by law enforcement and public safety dive teams, universities and salvage companies for recovery operations, subsea surveys and marine research. Sonars produce almost photographic images of the underwater environment regardless of water clarity. Side scan sonar can sweep several hundred feet of ocean, lake, or river bottom in one pass of the boat allowing large areas to be searched or surveyed quickly. Scanning sonar, which operates in water similar to the way radar operates in air, can image a 200 foot circle on the bottom in less than a minute.

Underwater Video Aids Scientists and Search Teams

Underwater video is now routinely used by a variety of government agencies in an array of projects from search and recovery operations to research and exploration. The type of system commonly used in these applications consists of a video camera mounted in a waterproof housing with a long cable connecting it to a monitor on the surface where the picture is viewed and recorded. There are numerous advantages of having a system that sends live video to the surface. Many law enforcement agencies and public safety dive teams put down a camera instead of a diver in the initial stages of an underwater search

Crashed EgyptAir Plane Located on the Seafloor

The cockpit voice recorder from EgyptAir flight MS804 has been retrieved by search teams in a breakthrough for investigators seeking to explain what caused the plane to crash into the sea killing all 66 people on board.   The Airbus A320 plunged into the Mediterranean early on May 19 on its way from Paris to Cairo.   Since then, search teams have worked against the clock to recover the two black box recorders crucial to explaining what went wrong, before they stop emitting signals in about a week.   Egypt's investigation committee said in a statement that a specialist vessel owned

Operations manager Richard Odion says he’s very happy with the new sonar and that it will be instrumental for pipeline surveys and salvage projects.    A few of the many other search teams using Fishers side scans are South Survey and Mapping Co. in China, Beadle County Office of Emergency Management in South Dakota, commercial diving company Alldive in Malta, Fall River Police in Massachusetts, Suffolk County Sheriffs Marine Unit in New York, Union Fire Company in Pennsylvania
