Teledyne Gavia Introduces ASW Training Target Module
Teledyne Gavia said it has recently delivered a Sonar Transponder Module (STM) for ASW training to an undisclosed military customer. The STM module made by Scanmatic AS of Norway and integrated into a Gavia payload module is capable of receiving and retransmitting sonar signals for training sonar operators. The STM consists of a flooded transducer compartment, an electronic compartment and a hydrophone that is towed behind the Gavia AUV. The STM is programmable to emulate different types of realistic submarine target characteristics including sizes and speeds for cost effective and reusable ASW

requirement for military mine warfare applications, where a trend is now being observed moving towards high-speed Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs) for fast transit into and out of operational areas. Towed sonar systems have the benefit of providing full resolution sonar data to the sonar operators onboard the surface vessel in real-time, which is a critical feature for search and survey operations requiring earliest possible prosecution of seabed targets. Onboard real time processing of sonar data also enables real-time online quality monitoring of sonar data. Passive towfish

Portuguese Navy Orders Sonar System Upgrades
, state-of-the-art high-resolution flat panel monitors. The system also provides enhanced capabilities for training as well as record and replay of acoustic data. All of these improvements are installed without enlarging the footprint or weight of the system in the ship, or increasing the number of sonar operators. The AN/SQS-510 medium-frequency hull-mounted sonar is currently in service on all twelve Royal Canadian Navy HALIFAX-class patrol frigates and three IROQUOIS-class destroyers. The system is also in use in ships of the Portuguese and Bulgarian navies. gdcanada.com
