Offshore robotics company FORSSEA ROBOTICS chose GMS as main technical partner to certify its real-time visual positioning technologies. A joint laboratory will be created to develop a common offer covering camera calibration, subsea image treatment and innovative photogrammetry solutions.FORSSEA ROBOTICS decided last year to adapt its Atoll ROV embedded visual docking technology into a stand-alone product.

Industry Collaboration Helps Oceanographers Study Climate
Measuring devices being installed on a cargo ship will provide oceanographers with vital data on the oceans’ ability to slow the build-up of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere as part of a major new collaboration between industry and the National Oceanography Center (NOC). STR Acquires Cable Counter Technology from Remontec
Great Yarmouth based Subsea Technology & Rentals Ltd (STR); global specialists in the design, production and rental of advanced subsea technology for the offshore industry have acquired the product rights to Remontec’s cable counter technology. Under the terms of the agreement, STR now own the design and copyright covering all Remontec’s T- Count Cable Counter range and have commenced a manufacturing and product development programme to ensure continued availability.

NOAA Hires Fugro to Monitor Shoreline Changes in Texas, Louisiana
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has awarded Fugro two mapping projects on the US Gulf Coast to monitor and quantify shoreline change in this flood-prone region.The projects, located in Texas and Louisiana, are underway and were awarded under an existing indefinite delivery indefinite quality (IDIQ) contract to support the agency’s Coastal Mapping Program. NOAA Forms Panel to Guide Ocean Exploration
NOAA announced the appointment of 13 members to a new federal Ocean Exploration Advisory Board that will provide guidance to NOAA and the nation on ocean exploration. “This distinguished board will advise NOAA on priority areas for exploration, investments in new technologies, and a strategic plan for greater understanding of our planet’s last frontier,” said NOAA Chief Scientist Richard W. Spinrad, Ph.D., who will serve as liaison to the board for NOAA Administrator Kathryn Sullivan, Ph.D.
Subsea Camera Integrated with ROV
For the first time, Battelle’s HorizonVue undersea camera was integrated with a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) as part of a demo in the Quincy Shipyard, home of Battelle’s Bluefin Robotics. The new camera allowed operators to see the harbor floor, a nearby hull and navigate through submerged pilings using a 360-degree live video feed. The instrument can operate at the ocean’s surface or down to depths of 4,500 meters, withstanding pressure of 6,575 pounds per square inch.
Seismic Handling System Contracts for Kongsberg Evotec
Kongsberg Maritime’s wholly owned deck equipment specialist Kongsberg Evotec reports a strong start to the year with three separate new contracts for advanced Seismic Handling systems. Two contracts, for customers located in China, are for delivery of Seismic Handling systems for a six streamer vessel and a two streamer vessel. Both vessels are currently under construction in China and Kongsberg Evotec will start equipment deliveries from October 2016.

Autonomous Multi-Vehicle System Designed for Long-Term Arctic Studies
Long-term data collection is needed to understand Arctic marine ecosystem changes as sea ice melts in response to climate change.However, direct observation is challenging as satellite sensors have a coarse spatial resolution and cannot detect the fine fractal structure of the ice. Deploying human-crewed ships to the area also is difficult due to extreme weather conditions and risks posed by floating broken ice.
Pacific Drilling Extends Utra-Deepwater Drillship Option
Pacific Drilling S.A. agrees with Samsung Heavy Industries to extend an option to construct an eighth ultra-deepwater drillship. The contractual option has been extended until January 18, 2013, on the same commercial terms, including delivery scheduled for the first quarter of 2015. Pacific Drilling says it is a fast growing company that is committed to becoming the industry’s preferred ultra-deepwater drilling contractor.
