Mappers Look to Chart World's Ocean Floor by 2030
Using data collected from underwater drones, merchant ships, fishing boats and even explorers, a new scientific project aims to map the ocean floor by 2030 and solve one of the world’s enduring mysteries. With 190 million square km (73 million square miles) of water - or about 93 percent of the world's oceans with a depth of over 200 meters (650 feet) - yet to be charted, the initiative is ambitious.Satinder Bindra…
Powering the Seafloor: Put a Socket in It
There’s an energy revolution coming on the seabed. In efforts to boost subsea oil and gas production and reach fields further from shore, in deeper and even Arctic waters, a subsea power revolution is in progress. Several multinationals are developing systems to provide electric power across the seafloor – think subsea power sockets.Giving access to subsea power this way would help oil and gas firms move processing equipment to the seafloor, instead of hosting it on platforms.
Rock Installation ROV Delivered to Van Oord
Subsea technology company Seatools said it has delivered a highly automated fall pipe remotely operated vehicle (ROV) on behalf of its client Van Oord. The 450-kW rock installation ROV underwent extensive sea trials and is ready to be deployed for subsea rock installation (SRI) campaigns from Van Oord’s new SRI vessel Bravenes. The ROV positions the fall pipe above the target (e.g., a pipeline) and with high accuracy facilitates rock installation in over 1,000 meters water depth.
