Following the completion of the design phase, existing torpedoes will be upgraded by BAE Systems at its Broad Oak facility in Portsmouth to the new design with initial deliveries in 2020 continuing until 2024. The contract secures 100 skilled engineering jobs for BAE Systems’ Maritime Services business at Broad Oak…
ASI Marine Claims ROV Record in Australia and Canada
ASI Marine has established the record in Australia and Canada for the longest tunnel swim with a Falcon ROV. By modifying a Saab Seaeye Falcon ROV, ASI Marine was able to send the vehicle through a pipeline stretching over four kilometers under Gladstone Harbor, Queensland to Curtis Island. They also sent the same modified Falcon through five kilometers of feeder pipes in Lake Ontario. Under Lake Ontario in Canada…
US Exits Search for ARA San Juan
The U.S. Navy said it has begun to wind down operations as part of the international search for the still-missing Argentine submarine A.R.A. San Juan that vanished in the South Atlantic in mid November. The U.S. joined the Argentina-led multinational search efforts within 24 hours of learning of the missing submarine on November 17, and is now drawing down, having twice swept the search areas assigned by the Argentine Navy with advanced sensors. U.S.
Oceanology International '18: Conference Schedule Finalized
The Technical Tracks conference program for Oceanology International 2018 at ExCel, London (March 13-15, 2018) has now been finalized, constituting the most extensive and cogent analysis of advances in ocean science and technology available under one roof. “The sheer scope and magnitude of the sessions is impressive,” enthuses Conference Manager Ellen Burgess. The conference program gets under way on Tuesday…
Scientists Study Largest Underwater Volcanic Eruption
In July 2012, airline passengers flying over the Southwest Pacific Ocean spotted a large and unusual object floating on the water’s surface. That object, which turned out to be a giant raft of pumice, was evidence that an underwater volcanic eruption had occurred. And as the raft continued to grow to roughly the size of Philadelphia, scientists observed that the eruption was extraordinarily large.
Armach's Hull Service Robot Excels in Over-the-horizon Operation Trials
Armach Robotics said on Tuesday that it had reached a major milestone by operating its hull cleaning robot successfully in full over-the-horizon (OTH) mode.In the water in Norfolk, VA, Armach’s hull service robot, was earlier this month monitored and controlled by staff at Armach’s command center in Plymouth, MA, using a 4G modem providing over-the-air connectivity.Once the communications connection was made between Norfolk and Plymouth…

Biofouling Foiled: UV Light Harnessed for Biofouling Control
Since the first deployment of in-situ monitoring instrumentation, biofouling has been a problem. Without an effective solution, people have historically had to accept the limits biofouling imposes on ocean sensing work, with significant repercussions. When instrumentation is deployed in-situ, the value of the data taken during the deployment corresponds with the longevity: information gleaned from a longer deployment is often more useful than information from one of a shorter term.

UN Oceans Conference: The High Seas Treaty
While many countries have agreed to take steps to protect the vast, ungoverned swathes of the world's oceans, they have yet to see their High Seas Treaty go into effect. This week's U.N. Oceans Conference in the French city of Nice hopes to change that.WHAT IS THE HIGH SEAS TREATY?The treaty, signed in 2023, provides a legal framework for creating marine protected areas on the "high seas", or the ocean areas that lie beyond any national jurisdiction.Currently…
Huntington Ingalls Industries Building Unmanned Systems Hub

Soil Research Unearths Collecting Point for Plastics
Collaborative research team, led by KAUST scientists, reveals a history of plastic sequestration in mangrove ecosystems.Global plastic production began to rise precipitously around 1950. Since that time production has grown at around 8.5% annually. Unfortunately, due to poor recapture and recycling globally, much of that plastic has ended up in the world’s oceans.Strangely, locating plastic with surveys of the world’s oceans has proven difficult.
Magnetic Fossils May Reveal Eels’ Internal GPS System
Microscopic magnetic fossils found in North Atlantic seafloor sediments may represent components of an internal "GPS system" for an ancient marine creature that used Earth's magnetic field to navigate long distances, according to scientists. The researchers said the fossils - about 50 times smaller than the width of a human hair - are made of a strongly magnetic iron-bearing mineral called magnetite.
