Kongsberg Naval Sonars for Göteborg-Class Corvettes
Kongsberg Maritime said it has been selected to deliver ST2400 VDS (Varial Depth Sonar) systems for Anti-Submarine Warfare applications (ASW) to the Royal Swedish Navy as part of SAAB’s upgrade program for the Göteborg-Class Corvettes fleet. The main purpose of the ST2400 VDS is to detect submarines, mines and Unmanned Underwater Vehicles in Littoral waters. The ST2400 VDS upgrade will strengthen the Göteborg-Class Corvettes Anti-Submarine capability operating in the Baltics.
Furuno DS60 DSL Selected for 200+ USCG Vessels
Furuno USA, Inc. said it has been awarded a five-year U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) IDIQ contract, valued at approximately $10 million, to supply Doppler Speed Logs (DSL) as part of the USCG’s Doppler Speed Refreshment Project. Tuco to Build Hydrographic Survey Boats for Denmark
Tuco Marine Group said it has signed a contract with DALO (The Danish Defense Acquisition and Logistics Organization) to deliver two bespoke hydrographic survey boats to replace two existing survey vessels that have become obsolete. The new vessels, based on Tuco’s ProZero concept, have been designed to allow full use of the latest technology for hydrographic surveys. Second Staten Island Ferry Ecospeed Application
Recently the underwater hull of m/v Sen. John J. Marchi, one of the ferries owned by Staten Island Ferries was coated with Ecospeed in Norfolk, Virginia, U.S.A. This is the second ferry owned by Staten Island Ferries that was given an Ecospeed treatment after m/v John Noblewas coated in Bridgeport, Connecticut last year. Ecospeed was also applied on one the company’s fuel barges in Staten Island, New York earlier this year and a third ferry is planned to be coated later this year.

The pace and quality of oil spill research in the United States typically ebbs and flows as a function of two, if not three important variables. First, after the 1989 Exxon Valdez grounding, there was a flurry of activity to ramp up oil spill research because it had been dormant for so long. The need was recognized, with plenty of money made available. Primarily, this research centered on conventional spill remediation techniques – for example, a tanker or barge spilling oil – and not much else.
Oregon State University Seeks New Research Vessels
Oregon State University (OSU) will issue a request for proposals (RFP) for a project to construct up to three advanced regional class research vessels to help replenish the aging United States academic fleet. OSU will implement a two-stage “best value procurement process” for selecting a single U.S. shipyard to construct the vessels, which allows the university to evaluate proposals on qualitative factors in addition to cost factors.
New Site Data Collected for Fundy Tidal Project
Efforts to understand the unique environmental conditions in the Minas Passage of the Bay of Fundy are moving forward. After a 27-day sea trial, a team comprised of staff at the Fundy Ocean Research Center for Energy (FORCE) working in concert with crew on the Dominion Victory have successfully recovered an underwater monitoring platform, known as FAST-1. “To explore the energy potential in the Bay of Fundy responsibly, we have to understand it,” said FORCE general manager Tony Wright.
InterMoor Completes Red Hawk Spar Decommissioning Work
InterMoor, an Acteon company, has completed its contract supporting the decommissioning of Anadarko Petroleum Corporation’s Red Hawk spar in the Gulf of Mexico. The Red Hawk spar is the deepest floating production platform to date to be decommissioned in the Gulf of Mexico. It is also the first spar decommissioned in the “Rigs-to-Reefs” program, which required the spar to be laid down on its side on the seafloor.
