- Assisting in navigating and maneuvering vessel.
- Cleaning and maintain vessel.
- Assigning crew to tasks.
- Supervising and perform routine shipboard maintenance as required.
- Launching and recover submersibles.
- Carrying out captain's orders.
- Working with chefs, stewards, engineers, and deckhands.
- Acting as second in command if captain is incapacitated.
- Planing the day's work and activities.
- Solving problems that come up.
- Maintaining deck log.
- Running safety drills.
- Training, direct, and supervise personnel in ship's maintenance duties in all activities relating to marlinspike, deck, boat seamanship, painting, upkeep of ship's external structure, rigging, deck equipment, and boats.
- Acting as petty officer-in-charge of picket boats, self-propelled barges, tugs, and other yard and district craft.
