Able Seaman

• In-charge steering the ship by following orders from the conning officer on watch when underway and or during docking/undocking maneuver. • Checking containerized cargo during loading/unloading operation. • Handling of mooring ropes during docking/undocking maneuver. • Attends gangway watch when vessel is in the anchorage area and keep monitoring in the anchor cable for dragging.

• In-charge handling of mooring lines, operates winches and takes control in lowering/raising of ramp. • Managing gangway watch and taking care of rat guards, watch mooring ropes and anchors while vessel in at anchorage area or in port. • Stands on wheel during navigation, lookout, underway checks on rolling cargoes. • Assists in loading/unloading of cargo, ensuring all safety measures were met and prevented damage to equipment. • Over-all incharge of cleanliness of the vessel’s superstructures and maintenance in the deck department.

• Incharge, handling of steering gears, flags, pilot ladder and various lights. • Managing gangway watch and taking care of rat guards watch mooring ropes and anchors while vessel is at anchorage area or in port. • Do checking in cargo during loading/discharging operation whenever applicable. • Assist the officer on watch during navigation.

• Observes in loading and unloading of cargoes to learn the methods of proper handling and stowing to cargo holds. • Assists deck officer to inspect the lifesaving and visual signaling equipments for defects. • Assists deck ratings in chipping, scraping, rusts and paints, or cleaning the ship’s hull, deck superstructure and other areas within the scope of duties. • Assists deck ratings in handling mooring lines during docking and undocking of the ship. • Turns wheel on the bridge to maneuver the ship as directed by the officer on duty. • Stands watch during specified period when the ship underway. • Stands gangway watch to prevent unauthorized person from boarding the vessel when the ship is in port.
