Vessel Operations
Description

 As a member of Alaska marine highway system I had many different jobs on many different vessels. I have worked as a steward, ordinary seamen, watch man, wiper, oiler apprentice. Every one of those jobs required that I familiarize myself with the vessel, safety equipment, participate in weekly safety drills, and I had to quickly adapt to new jobs on a weekly basis. Amhs also made sure that all employees got training in hazmat, crowd control, use in all vessel safety equipment( lifeboats, survival gear, different types of doors, lock out tag out,ect.).

Steward duties:

  • maintain vessel cleanliness
  • cook
  • kitchen prep work
  • use industrial cleaning materials on heavy duty jobs
  • keep records on stores
  • group/ strategic planning
  • interact with customers
  • train customers on vessel security
  • supervise other employees 

Ordinary seamen:

  • vessel refurbishment
  • vessel security gaurd ( properly control unruly customers)
  • keep track the state of all vessel activity
  • repair items outside of engine room
  • assist in navigation and steering
  • load and unload cargo and passengers
  • operate forklift
  • line handling
  • call outs
  • clean exterior of vessel
  • assist mates 
  • paint

Wiper:

  • clean and maintain engine room
  • assist engine room personnel
  • self manage
  • work on engine room equipment
  • take on fuel
  • general repairs
  • clean bilge and use bilge system
  • learn from oiler, jr., engineers

Oiler apprentice:

  • sign off rfpew's
  • learn the trade
  • make rounds
  • assist engine room personnel
  • trace out piping, wiring, valves, ect.
