International Opportunities in Marine Technology

On Tuesday October 25 the Marine and Oceanographic Network in association with Maritime Alliance and the Marine Technology Society held a meeting covering International Opportunities in Marine Technology.  Overseeing the program were Mr. Harlan Doliner, President of MOTN, Chris Jakubiak, Chair, New England Section of the Marine Technology Society, and Michael B. Jones, President of The Maritime Alliance in San Diego.

The Maritime Alliance is a San Diego, CA-based non-profit that looks for innovative, dual/multi usage defense/security and maritime technologies from around the world and tries to create visibility so they will be utilized as quickly as possible in the U.S. and elsewhere.

TMA is the recognized cluster organizer for the San Diego maritime technology cluster.  With over 135 maritime technology companies and organizations, San Diego is the largest single county maritime technology cluster in the U.S. and one of the biggest in the world with specializations in aquaculture, bio-medicines, communications, desalination technology, ocean observation, research, undersea robotics, underwater connectors and other fields. 

TMA also reaches out nationally and internationally to encourage maritime technology cluster growth and maritime business. They will be holding the third annual Maritime Business and Technology Summit November 29- 30 in San Diego.

Other speakers included MaryAnne Burke, Sr. International Trade Specialists of the United States Foreign Commercial Service who spoke specifically about New England Export opportunities and the efforts to help businesses expand overseas. Several of those efforts include providing market research, and resources to provide information regarding what the best industries are to support a company’s product. 

Julia Rauner Guerrero, Sr. Trade Specialist for Marine Technology, also from USFCS spoke about the need to promote U.S. Marine Technology products and services world- wide.

John Joyce from the Small Business Association was on hand to cover financing and availability of loan programs for growing businesses internationally.

The February 2024 edition of Marine Technology Reporter is focused on Oceanographic topics and technologies.
