France Plans 1 GW Offshore Wind Farm

turbines of around 12 megawatts each, in an area where wind conditions and the seabed are very favorable for offshore wind power at a competitive price, the ministry said in statement.France is racing to boost the share of renewable generation capacity in its energy mix and reduce its dependence on nuclear energy. It plans to shut down old nuclear plants and will phase out coal-fired generation to curb greenhouse gas emissions."The development of renewable energies, especially at sea, is a major component of the diversification of our electricity mix," Ecology Minister Elisabeth Borne, who is

Van Oord Wins Taiwanese Offshore Wind Contract

will begin in 2020, Van Oord said, with a capacity of 350 MW connected to the Taiwan power grid that year and the remaining part in 2021.The project is part of the Taiwanese government's plans to install offshore wind farms with a total capacity of 5,500 MW by 2025, in a push to phase out nuclear energy. The Yunlin project is the first wind contract for Van Oord outside Europe. The company has worked on dredging and other offshore projects in Taiwan, where it created 250 hectares (617.8 acres) of new land in the port of Kaohsiung last year.($1 = 0.8631 euros)(Reporting by Bart Meijer; Editing

Taiwan: The Next Battleground for Offshore Wind

the government aims to invest $23 billion on onshore and offshore wind projects by 2025, law firm Jones Day says.Taiwan is making a big push to attract investments in renewable technology as it phases out nuclear power by 2025, after the 2011 Fukushima disaster in Japan highlighted the risks of using nuclear energy in a region prone to earthquakes. For developers in Europe, where expanding offshore wind projects particularly in the North Sea has driven down costs, Taiwan is seen as a route into Asian markets, such as Japan and South Korea, where the technology is still barely used.Denmark's Orsted and

transfer volunteer. He earned his B.S. degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from California State University.   “When customers are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars a day offshore, products need to work right 100 percent of the time. Kevin’s experience in nuclear energy provided him with the engineering experience and sense of responsibility we felt was necessary for the quality control role at Greensea,” said Marybeth Gilliam, CMO, VP Sales, Greensea

Saudis to Launch $30-50 billion Renewable Energy Program

the program, which would produce 10 gigawatts of power.   In addition to that program, Riyadh is in the early stages of feasibility and design studies for its first two commercial nuclear reactors, which will total 2.8 gigawatts, he said.   "There will be significant investment in nuclear energy," Falih said.   Under an economic reform program launched last year, Saudi Arabia is seeking to use non-oil means to generate much of its additional future energy needs, to avoid running down oil resources which are required to generate foreign exchange through exports.   Falih

Neptune Shows Versatility

, Mediterranean and Africa, said: “Neptune is built on strong foundations in oil and gas, but utilizing the knowledge and expertise we have within the business across a wider spectrum of applications is at the heart of ambitious plans for growth. “Decommissioning, renewable energy, nuclear energy and a wide range of subsea opportunities are all open to us and the Thames project is a perfect example of the ability we have to diversify. “UXO surveys are common throughout Europe, an unfortunate wartime legacy, and we are well versed in the process – from initial magnetometer

Luode Consulting Choses Sonardyne's LRTs

; During winter, sea ice plays a crucial environmental and economic role for many Scandinavian countries, affecting everything from fishing, walking and skiing, to the ice roads that connect remote communities. Continuous year-round water quality monitoring ensures that the impact from offshore and nuclear energy industry activities upon ice formation, together with naturally occurring phenomena, can be closely observed.   To collect data for its research, Luode Consulting uses instruments such as Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) moored on the seabed using Sonardyne LRTs. At the end

Germans Push Renewable Energy Reform

to slow cost increases as Europe's largest economy moves to nearly double its green power share to 45 percent by 2025. Chancellor Angela Merkel's cabinet will adopt reforms to put the 'Energiewende', or transition to renewable energy, on a sustainable path as Germany attempts to wean itself off of nuclear energy and fossil fuels without killing off industries and jobs. The reforms will slow the rapid expansion of green power, which already accounts for 25 percent of Germany's electricity; force new investors in green power to take some risk; and protect households from bearing the brunt of future
