Understanding Collective Behavior

of collective behavior and to the study of robotics."If you understand biology better, then you can build better robots. And better robots would help us to better understand biological systems," said researcher Liang Li.Other researchers at the university have considered the role of social networks in how groups respond to their environment. Scientists Turn to Big Data in Hunt for Minerals, Oil and Gas

; "Minerals occur on Earth in clusters," said Robert Hazen, executive director of the Deep Carbon Observatory at the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington and an author of the study.   "When you see minerals together it's very like the way that humans interact in social networks such as Facebook," he said.   Hazen said the technique was also like Amazon, which recommends books based on a client's previous orders, or by media streaming company Netflix, which proposes movies based on a customer's past viewing habits.   "They are using vast amounts

Scientists Reveal Sharks’ Surprising Social Networks

Although historically seen as solitary animals, new research shows sharks may have a more complex social structure than previously thought. Using tracking devices to trace the movements of individual animals in the open ocean, researchers found that Sand Tiger sharks form complex social networks that are typically seen in mammals but rarely observed in fish.   “Higher-order decision-making processes are often associated with mammals, or species that we think of as really smart – dolphins, elephants, or chimpanzees,” said Danielle Haulsee, a PhD candidate in oceanography at the
