Geotechnical, Marine, and Coastal Design Solutions for Marshaling Ports to meet US Offshore Wind Power Policy Targets

Speed in the United States, the offshore wind (OSW) market is beginning to heat up. The White House policy target of 30 GW of offshore wind power by 2030, increasing the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s (BOEM’s) leasing awards, and permitting target approval dates, together with more state energy procurement awards, are creating demand for more port infrastructure, Jones Act compliant vessels, and manufacturing facilities for wind farm components.  Recently a study (Parkison, Sara B. and Willett Kempton, "Marshalling Ports Required to Meet US Offshore Wind Power Policy Targets"

Freight Planning… What About Offshore Wind…?

. That excludes, however, some important work, from utilities (not defined) to “public access” (roads, highways…?), to environmental mitigation. The estimate for another port, the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal: $297 million, again excluding critical project line items.NY’s state energy agency plans to make $200 million available for help with port requirements. That’s a lot of money but keep in mind New York officials want the social and economic benefits from OSW investments to impact large sections of the state, at least from Staten Island to Albany.  Demands from

.5 million in an earlier round of bidding.”Another critical Strategy outcome: the National Research and Development Consortium, currently comprised of most major offshore wind developers and four Atlantic coast state agencies from Massachusetts to Virginia.  In 2018, DOE chose the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYERDA) as consortium administrator. DOE contributed $20.5 million for competitively solicited R&D projects, and NYSERDA matched that amount. Finally, Norton emphasized the importance of DOE’s economic analyses pertaining to offshore wind and how it

US Announces $18.5 Mln for Offshore Wind Research

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced today that $18.5 million has been made available for offshore wind research and development (R&D).The DOE selected the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to administer an $18.5 million cooperative innovation hub that will bring together industry, academia, government and other stakeholders to advance offshore wind plant technologies, develop innovative methods for wind resource and site characterization, and develop advanced technology solutions for installation, operation, maintenance and supply chain. The overall goal

BP, SOCAR to Ink Caspian Sea Exploration Deal

Azeri state energy company SOCAR plans to sign a production-sharing agreement with BP to jointly explore prospects in a new block, D-230, in the North Absheron basin of the Caspian Sea before the end of 2017, a source at SOCAR said on Thursday. BP and SOCAR signed a memorandum of understanding on joint exploration of this block in May 2016 in a move that reflected efforts by SOCAR and foreign companies to make new discoveries in the oil-rich country. "Participants of the deal will each have 50 percent of shares in the agreement," the source, who did not want to be named, told Reuters.

CNPC, Guangdong Ink Deal on S. China Sea Methane Hydrate

China's Ministry of Land and Resources, state energy giant China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC) and Guangdong province have agreed to build a pilot methane hydrate project in the South China Sea, CNPC said its website on Monday.   The trial prospecting of the deep-sea gas resource, also known as "flammable ice", will be in the Shenhu area of the South China Sea, after initial tests run in May, CNPC said.   The report did not give further details on the timeline or financial investment on developing this pilot project. Methane hydrates are gas frozen into ice-like crystals

New York Seeks to Develop US' Biggest Offshore Wind Projects

; Offshore wind is key to meeting Cuomo's Clean Energy Standard goal to meet 50 percent of electricity needs with renewable sources by 2030 in New York, the second-most-populous U.S. state after California.   The governor directed the Department of Environmental Conservation and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to study how the state could become 100 percent renewable in the future.   Unlike in many European countries, there is only one offshore wind farm operating in the United States at present, Deepwater Wind's 30-MW project off Block Island, Rhode
