Saltenna has published peer-reviewed field results in IEEE Xplore. Its Plasmonix technology launches radio-frequency surface plasmon waves that travel along interfaces rather than straight through the water. In three underwater test scenarios, communication reached distances many times the predicted bulk range, even after accounting for ohmic absorption and spherical spreading.

The paper was presented at IEEE UComms 2026 in Sestri Levante, Italy, and added to IEEE Xplore on Oct. 15. It also lays out follow-on experiments to pin down where the method beats acoustic and optical links.

August marks the annual hydrographic e-magazine and the opportunity to highlight some of the global research underway in our world’s oceans. We explore hydrographic data, climate simulations, subsea networks and cybersecurity, camera technology, autonomous operations, sonar and survey solutions, as well as ROVs.
