The University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) Council is seeking nominations for Chair-Elect. The Chair-Elect begins a leadership progression, serving two years in each of three successive roles: Chair-Elect, Chair, and Immediate-Past-Chair.

As Chair-Elect, the individual will support the Chair in representing UNOLS and, when needed, assume the Chair’s responsibilities for meetings and Council activities. The Chair-Elect will work closely with the Chair and UNOLS Council while preparing to assume the role of Chair.

As Chair, the individual will represent UNOLS throughout the oceanographic community, lead UNOLS meetings and the UNOLS Council, and provide direction and oversight to UNOLS committees, the Executive Secretary, and the UNOLS Office.  The UNOLS Office provides 1 month of salary per year to the UNOLS Chair.

As Immediate-Past-Chair, the individual will provide continuity and institutional experience to UNOLS, participating in Council activities and offering perspective and guidance based on their experience as Chair.

The Chair-Elect, Chair, Immediate-Past-Chair and the UNOLS Office leadership meet biweekly to discuss community business and ongoing UNOLS activities.

Nomination Process

Nominations are invited from individuals affiliated with a UNOLS institution and may be submitted to [email protected]. Self-nominations are encouraged.

Each nomination should include:

  • A 2-page CV
  • A statement of interest

The statement of interest should describe how the nominee’s efforts, service, or scholarship can contribute to the Council’s current focus areas or help expand its scope. More information about the Council’s priorities can be found through meeting agendas and presentations on the UNOLS Council webpage.

A Council nominating committee will consider the qualifications of nominees and strive to ensure regional and disciplinary balance in the selection of candidates. The slate of candidates recommended by the Committee will be subject to a vote by the UNOLS membership prior to the 2026 UNOLS Annual Meeting.

Nominations are due by September 30, 2026
