UH Aims to Develop Subsea Pipeline Inspection Autonomous Robot

UH consists of ROVs equipped with multiple stress wave-based smart touch sensors, video cameras and scanning sonars that can swim along a subsea pipeline to inspect flange bolts – bolted connections have accelerated the rate of pipeline accidents that result in leakage, according to the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE).The BSEE is funding the project with a $960,493 grant to UH researchers Zheng Chen, Bill D. Katmai Flowline Jumper Failure Caused by Hydrogen Embrittlement

Hydrogen embrittlement was found to have caused a 2020 flowline jumper failure in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) said in a recent report.The incident, which occurred on July 24, 2020, in the Fieldwood Energy-operated deepwater Katmai field, resulted in the release of approximately 479 barrels of oil. The affected well, Well #1, is located in about 2,082 feet of water on Green Canyon Area Block 40, approximately 140 miles south of New Orleans. US Oil Spill Testing, Response Facility Gets Major Upgrade

The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement’s National Oil Spill Response Research and Renewable Energy Test Facility, known as Ohmsett, has now reopened after undergoing significant refurbishment over the past eight months as part of BSEE’s ongoing maintenance plan. Originally constructed and operated by the U.S. EPA in 1974, the facility was passed to the U.S. Navy and then to the Department of the Interior’s Minerals Management Service in 1990. Trump Requests $200.5 Mln for BSEE, $193.4 for BOEM

U.S. President Donald Trump's proposed fiscal year (FY) 2020 budget submitted to Congress on Monday includes $200.5 million for the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) and $193.4 million for the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), up from the respective $199.9 million and $179.3 million requests for FY 2019.The requested BSEE budget includes $129.9 million of appropriated funds and $70.6 million in offsetting collections of revenue from rental receipts, and cost recovery and inspection fees. This $70.6 million of revenue accounts for 35 percent of the requested budget.
