Sonar Systems Help Search Teams, Scientists and Salvors

Police, Dive Companies Find Many Uses for Side Scan Sonars

New York City’s water supply system. Members of this department are New York State police officers and they investigate more than 4,000 complaints each year including illegal transportation, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste. To assist in these investigations, the DEP Police acquired a JW Fishers SSS-600K side scan sonar. The sonar allows them to survey reservoirs to ensure no foreign objects are contaminating the city’s water supply. Dive Teams Depend on Detection Devices

. This summer proved to be an especially treacherous one on Idaho’s waterways with seven people drowning since Memorial Day. To assist in their recovery operations the county’s search and rescue group, in conjunction with the Bingham County Sheriff Department, recently acquired a JW Fishers SSS-600K side scan. This sonar will locate anything from a drowning victim to a sunken vessel. Military, Government Agencies Utilize Side Scan Sonars

They were put to the test in 2012 when Superstorm Sandy battered the U.S. east coast causing more than $68 billion in damage and claiming the lives of 268 people. Pe and Dive Teams Gear Up for Underwater Search

, the Tafton Fire Company put together a Water Rescue Team with specially trained members equipped to deal with incidents involving open water, swift water, and rapid deployment search-rescue/recovery. Police and Dive Teams Rely on Underwater Search Equipment

. Although the town has less than 2,000 residents, Downe Township Fire / Rescue has a dozen highly trained divers and the team is well equipped. All have knowledge in swift water and cold water rescue. To assist in locating drowning victims, sunken vessels, and submerged vehicles the team bought a JW Fishers SSS-600K side scan sonar. This high frequency sonar is capable of scanning 200 feet of bottom on each side of the towfish and produces detailed images of any object lying on the lake, river, or ocean floor. Scanning 400 feet of bottom with each pass of the vessel allows large areas to be searched
