Officials Urge EPA to Remove Toxic 'Forever Chemicals' from the Hudson River

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand earlier this month stood with local leaders and environmental advocates at Albany City Hall to demand that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) take additional action to clean up polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) “forever chemicals” in the Hudson River.PCBs are toxic manmade chemicals that can linger in water and soil for decades. Exposure is associated with a variety of serious health conditions, including cancer. From 1947 to 1977, General Electric dumped 1.2 million pounds of PCBs into the Hudson River north of Albany. In 1984, the EPA designated a

benchmarks are met; plus identifies ‘extra’ workA new landmark in the making  Since 1955, the Tappan Zee Bridge has been a critical thoroughfare for New Yorkers commuting between Rockland and Westchester Counties, located approximately 20 miles north of Manhattan and across the Hudson River from each other. However, a heavy increase in traffic and exponentially increasing maintenance costs ultimately lead to the decision to replace the bridge. The Governor Mario M. Marine Diving Service's salvage track record includes everything from small objects to big vessels, and even a historic tug boat engine. In a recent search, Captain and diver Zdenek Ulman used the Pulse 8X to locate and retrieve an expensive propeller lost at the bottom of the Hudson River. An unnamed vessel lost its 30” diameter propeller, and it was completely buried in the mud with no visible features. “I had the general location described to me, but I did not know the exact spot where the propeller was lost,” Captain Ulman said.In an effort to find the missing

perfectly.” Another company using the cable tracker is Marine Technologies Inc. (MTI), a commercial diving company and heavy marine contractor in Baltimore, Md. President Terry Clark said, “We recently used our CT-1 on a project in New York tracking utility lines running under the Hudson River near the new Tappan Zee Bridge. Once all of the existing lines were successfully located with the cable tracker, our team installed 15,000 feet of new fiber optic cable six feet below the natural bottom of the river. We chose Fishers cable trackers because of their reliability and ease of operation

Joint Effort on to Repair Hudson River Cable

Hudson Transmission Partners, LLC (HTP), owner and operator of an electric power cable buried beneath the Hudson River between Edgewater, New Jersey and New York City, is working closely with the U.S. Coast Guard, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (NYDEC), and other agencies to contain the release of small amounts of non-toxic cable fluid into the Hudson River. The fluid release was detected on Saturday and is the apparent result of damage to a portion of the cable in the Hudson River near the New Jersey shoreline

. This in turn increases the acidity of ocean waters and reduces oxygen levels. Shallow-water seeps that may be related to offshore groundwater discharge were detected at the edge of the shelf and in the upper part of Hudson Canyon, an undersea gorge that represents the offshore extension of the Hudson River. Methane from these seeps could directly reach the atmosphere, contributing to increased concentrations of this potent greenhouse gas.  More extensive shallow-water surveys than described in this study will be required to document the extent of such seeps.
