UUV Integration Will Transform Submarine Tactics

and engage targets. UUVs could also be used to augment the host submarine's passive sensing by structuring a wide aperture, offboard array, relaying contact data to the host submarine via secure burst acoustic communication. For this role, UUVs could be fitted with advanced, miniaturized passive sonar technologies, such as the KraitArray, a thin line towed array from Systems Engineering & Assessment Ltd (SEA).Should war come, attack submarines will be high on the enemy’s target list, and for the U.S. Navy, with its looming SSN shortfall, shipbuilding woes, and overburdened fleet, safeguarding

DISCOVERY: High-Res Mapping Tech Helps Find New Hydrothermal Vent Field

, Canada, researchers attached two high-resolution mapping technologies to an ROV; an M3 Sonar and Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Sonar (InSAS). The technologies were used in tandem to create highly detailed seafloor maps with up to 3-centimeter resolution. For comparison, the best shipboard sonar technologies create maps with 15- to 50-meter resolution in water depths of 1.5 to 3 kilometers. The finely detailed maps allowed scientists to locate new hydrothermal vents surrounding the Galápagos, characterize the chemicals they emit, and the animals that live on them. Fifteen species not previously

further their capabilities development. There’s nothing definite but we’ve had a lot of conversations and the Coast Guard is always interested in partnerships that can further common goals.”In the meantime, the Argus team continues to work with multiple partners to develop passive sonar technologies in order to increase its detection range.Argus is the current iteration of a long-standing program at Division Newport. Initially developed after 9/11, the program started as a swimmer/diver defense program and has expanded over the years to include aerial interface, UUV detection, and passive

US Navy to Evaluate Kraken's AquaPix MINSAS

, Kraken will optimize the MINSAS 60 sensor making it better suited for small, man-portable AUVs while offering a significant increase in capability and performance for man-portable platforms. The U.S. Navy and its allies continue to invest in man-portable AUVs, which today utilize a range of sonar technologies and make up the largest deployment of all AUV classes worldwide.Karl Kenny, Kraken’s President and CEO said, “We are very pleased to be awarded this FCT contract as this represents a truly significant opportunity for Kraken. The competition for FCT awards is fierce and only a few

New ROTV System to Aid German Naval Research

WehrTechnische Dienststelle (WTD 71), developer of new underwater technologies for the German navy, has acquired a MacArtney FOCUS 2 ROTV system representing a stable and flexible instrumentation platform as the basic tool for its development efforts.    With the purpose of testing SAS sonar technologies for mine detection, a full scale on-site demo of a Raytheon ProSAS installed on a FOCUS 2 ROTV system was organized for WTD 71. The advantages of the FOCUS 2 ROTV as a flexible instrumentation platform were recognized by the researchers at WTD 71, who instantly came up with new ideas for other

RoweTech Names RTA Mid-Atlantic Agent

region. Rowe designs, develops and manufactures acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCP) for applications in oceans, lakes and rivers. Rowe ADCP/DVLs are used on AUVs and ROVs in coastal and deep ocean applications. Rowe manufactures products using the most established and modern acoustic Doppler sonar technologies in a broad and versatile product line of high performance electronics for current profile and bottom vehicle-tracking velocity measurements.   The RTA agreement is one of many that RoweTech has with key agents worldwide, and the addition of Chic Ransone adds another agent with extensive

Lowrance TotalScan Debuts Single Transducer Solution

today the evolution of convenience and superior performance in fishfinding technologies – the new Lowrance TotalScan all-in-one transducer – combining proven CHIRP sonar capabilities with exclusive high-resolution StructureScan HD and DownScan Imaging technology. With all three sonar technologies in one transducer, anglers receive the benefits of greater fish-target separation and less interference for a more clutter-free display with CHIRP Sonar, plus photo-like images of fish-holding structure on both sides of your boat with StructureScan HD – along with the same photo-like

Kraken Awarded $1.5 Mln Defense Deal

is primarily comprised of Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) and Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs).    The future of naval warfare continues to evolve toward smaller vessels, littoral operations and underwater intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions, Kraken said. Advanced sonar technologies have therefore matured to support solutions that can economically survey and detect small objects hidden on the seabed and can enter into confined spaces where underwater explosives are likely to be hidden.    Kraken  said the underwater defense market is evolving rapidly,
