Around 40 oil and gas students from across Europe are preparing to come together at the inaugural Europe Petro League this month, a new competition launched by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Aberdeen Section.

The ten teams which have made it through to the final, including a team from Aberdeen University, will compete during the daylong event being held during Offshore Europe at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre.

The competition, organised by volunteers from SPE Aberdeen’s Young Professionals (YP) committee is free to attend and is open to anyone, including those visiting the exhibition.

The panel of judges will consist of leading industry professionals including Hugh Rees, subsurface manager at BP, Alan Johnson, principal petrophysicist at Shell, John Harris, president of Gaffney, Cline & Associates and Nikhil Shindgikar, section head of green well services chemicals & REACH for Europe & Africa at Schlumberger. The judges will be holding career talks as well as a question and answer session during the event to offer students advice and guidance.

Competing in teams of four, those who qualified for the competition after answering an essay question will vie for first place during the final stages of the competition. Through case study analysis and fast paced oil and gas question and answer rounds, students will have the chance to demonstrate their technical knowledge in front of prospective employers as well as win a prize of £2000.

Oludare Elebiju, SPE Europe Petro League project lead said: “We have had great success in the first round of the Europe Petro League. It is hugely encouraging to see such a high standard of entries from the industry’s future talent, including the five shortlisted teams from Scottish Universities.

“Offshore Europe is a highly influential event within the oil and gas sector, and will contribute to successfully building the profile of the Europe Petro League. SPE Aberdeen would like to urge the thousands of delegates expected to attend the exhibition to come along to watch even just part of the competition, and support the next generation of oil and gas professionals.

The Europe Petro League competition will take place at Aberdeen Exhibition & Conference Centre on Wednesday, 4 September, 2013, with winners expected to be announced between 3.30 and 4.00pm.
