Okeanus Takes Delivery of Deepwater Box Cores
Okeanus Science and Technology LLC (Okeanus) has added custom-designed, deepwater box cores to its catalog of equipment available for lease. As part of its suite of equipment, Okeanus offers clients a variety of box cores sizes. The most recent additions to Okeanus’ box core line are the largest class offered for leasing and have openings measuring 50 cm x 50 cm with a depth of approximately 60 cm. Fully laden by weights, the new box core design weighs nearly 1,200 lbs.

Flight MH370: Latest Fugro AUV Joins the Hunt
Fugro took delivery of the Hugin 1000 Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), the Echo Surveyor VII, in December 2014. Depth rated to 4,500 metres, the new AUV now holds the record for the deepest Hugin AUV dive, surveying in water depths surpassing 4,200 m. As the latest addition to Fugro’s AUV fleet, the Echo Surveyor VII is specifically designed for high resolution and efficient survey operations in water depths reaching 4,500 metres.

Thales, ASV Develop Unmanned Minewarfare Vehicle
Thales UK has signed a contract with Autonomous Surface Vehicles Ltd (ASV Ltd) to develop a re-configurable Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) to meet the challenges of future off-board Mine Countermeasures (MCM) operations. The low signature USV, which is 11.5m in length and 3.6m in beam, will have a maximum speed of around 25 knots. The vehicle is now under construction and will be undergoing acceptance trials later this year.
Outdated Systems Placing Vessels at Risk of Cyber-Attack
Maritime vessels are under significant threat of cyber-attack because many are carrying outdated software and were not designed with cyber security in mind, according to new research. But operators could easily mitigate against such dangers by updating security systems, improving ship design and providing better training for crews, the study led by Plymouth University’s Maritime Cyber Threats Research Group suggests.
