Deep-sea Mining: A New Gold Rush or Environmental Disaster?

Lusty, director of the UK Critical Minerals Intelligence Centre at the British Geological Survey, said assessments comparing deep-sea mining projects with terrestrial mining "are only as good as the data they're based on, which is limited for deep-sea environments".Lusty, who led a British government-commissioned review on deep-sea mining published in 2021, said companies also face challenges in creating a business case. Some would-be buyers like major technology and car companies like Google, Samsung and BMW have called for a temporary ban, and there are likely extra costs compared to mining

a "strategic extension of both offshore and onshore wind"."It is still a technology in its very early stage, which has considerable challenges regarding how to handle it," he said in the interview published on Thursday..Orsted and two partners secured funding in August from the British government for a "green hydrogen" project.Hydrogen gas has long been seen as a potential alternative to fossil fuels as it emits water when burnt, not CO2, the greenhouse gas emitted by coal, oil and natural gas. But making hydrogen from water by electrolysis, using renewable power, requires

said.Britain is the world's largest offshore wind market, hosting 36 percent of globally installed offshore wind capacity, data from the Global Wind Energy Council showed.Walney Extension was among the first renewable projects to secure a so-called contract for difference (CFD) subsidy from the British government in 2014.The contract guarantees it a minimum price for electricity of 150 pounds ($195) per megawatt hour (MWh) for 15 years.Since this was awarded, the cost of offshore wind has fallen dramatically to a low of 57.50 pounds per MWh in the last auction held in 2017.Blades for both sets of turbines

GE to Trial World’s Largest Wind Turbine in UK

U.S. conglomerate General Electric will test the world's largest wind turbine in a facility in northeast England, it said on Tuesday. GE Renewable Energy, the renewable arm of the U.S. firm, and the British government-funded Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult signed a five-year agreement to test GE's Haliade-X 12 megawatt (MW) turbine in Blyth, Northumberland. "This is an important agreement because it will enable us to prove Haliade-X in a faster way by putting it under controlled and extreme conditions," John Lavelle, president & CEO of GE's Offshore Wind business

has been undergoing conservation stabilization and additional research. The bell is intact and generally in very good condition. Two embossed markings - introduced when the bronze bell was first cast - are evident on the artifact: a Royal Navy "broad arrow" indicating property of the British Government, as well as the date "1845." "The bell of HMS Erebus provides a tangible and compelling connection to the Franklin ships and is an important part of naval and Canadian history,” Aglukkaq said. “The recovery of this important artifact is the crowning achievement

competition and lower prices. Last September a consortium including Barclays Infrastructure Funds Management Limited and a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corporation won a tender, allowing them to maintain and operate the transmission link to the London Array offshore wind farm for 20 years. The British government aims to install 8-15 gigawatts of offshore wind capacity by 2020 to help meet emissions reduction goals and European renewable energy targets. But in the past few months several firms including DONG, EON, RWE and Iberdrola-owned Scottish Power have all scrapped or scaled back huge offshore
