NOC's Professor Ed Hill Receives CBE

The National Oceanography Centre’s Chief Executive, Professor Ed Hill, received the insignia of a CBE at an investiture at Windsor Castle held by HRH the Duke of Cambridge. Professor Hill was awarded the CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honors 2020 list, in recognition of his services to ocean and environmental sciences.Professor Hill has been committed to ocean exploration and observation throughout his 35-year career, and recently led the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) to becoming an independent charity. Under his guidance, hundreds of scientists, engineers, and technicians have continued

Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) and he played a critical role in bringing scientific computing onboard ships – most notably on the RRS Discovery – to process the vast quantities of data quickly and to adaptively adjust sampling to what was developing in the ocean.  Professor Ed Hill, Chief Executive of the National Oceanography Centre, said “Raymond was a great scientist, a fine colleague, mentor and inspiration to many and his loss will be felt by his former colleagues and all those he worked with at sea including mariners, technicians and engineers.“His way of

and increasing NOC’s external income.“This is a really exciting appointment that will enable NOC to move from being wholly reliant on traditional sources of mostly public sector research income and moving the emphasis from being reactive to being proactive in this area,” said Professor Ed Hill, Chief Executive of the National Oceanography Center. “Huw will play a key role in drawing on NOC’s scientific and technical expertise in a way which enables us to diversify our revenue streams into higher margin work than is normally available through our conventional funding sources”

took several trips over a number of days, and the data sensors have now been taken to CSIRO where a team have managed to successfully recover some of the information. It is hoped that a scientific analysis of the recovered data will soon provide further insights into this remarkable journey.Professor Ed Hill, Executive Director of the NOC, said “Finding this instrument is like an early Christmas present. The Antarctic Circumpolar Current is key to understanding the dynamics of the global ocean, so these sustained observations are incredibly important. There is no better place to make these observations

At the National Oceanography Center (NOC) in Southampton, U.K. for Ocean Business 2017, Marine Technology Reporter was able to sit down with Professor Ed Hill, NOC Executive Director, to discuss the science and technologies moving ocean studies forward.   Please give an overview of your activities here at the National Oceanography Center. The National Oceanography Center is part of the Natural Environment Research Council which is the main body that funds environmental science, including oceanography, in the U.K. We are a national facility. We undertake research in large-scale oceanography

The February 2024 edition of Marine Technology Reporter is focused on Oceanographic topics and technologies.
