COORC, Captain Moore Partner for Environmental Awareness

COORC announced the official partnership between the Clean our Ocean’s Refuge Coalition and Captain Charles Moore’s foundation, the Algalita Marine Research Institute. The meeting between Tom Hirshberg, founder of COORC and Captain Charles Moore, founder of Algalita Marine Research Institute, marked a productive and progressive step forward in the formation of the COORC strategy to reduce oceanic pollution and clean up beaches around the world.

The first campaign COORC is focused on is to bring attention to one of the world’s most pressing ecological problems, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. COORC will be joining Captain Moore to document his July 2014 research voyage to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. COORC will create a documentary cultivating Captain Moore's 15 years of research into one captivating motion picture.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a massive collection of plastic debris floating within the Pacific Ocean. Estimates of the size of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch range from 270,000 square miles to more than 5,800,000 square miles.

“We are very excited to be able to invite Classrooms from around the world to log in and interact "LIVE" via streaming video. A ship to shore date will be set for classrooms to organize and for students to ask the onboard scientists and marine biologists’ questions. This voyage will consist of 6 weeks aboard Captain Moore's Research vessel,” said COORC founder, Tom Hirshberg.

COORC’s new relationship with the Algalita Marine Research Institute will bring legitimacy to the efforts of its team and further inspire the developments of COORC technology. Founder of the Algalita Marine Research Institute, Captain Charles Moore, was the first to bring attention to the immensity of garbage debris floating throughout the Pacific. Captain Moore’s 1999 research showed that there were six times more plastic in this part of the ocean than there were zooplankton that feeds ocean life. These numbers were significantly higher than expected and shocked many marine scientists and oceanographers.

The mutual partnership between Algalita and COORC will bring about more awareness to the dire situation of that which is "The Great Pacific Garbage Patch" and its negative effects on the ocean currents, aquatic marine life as well as human life.
