How Do Desert Storms Affect Ocean Phytoplankton?

sweep these particles as far as the Pacific, where dust ultimately settles in the open ocean. This desert dust contains, among other minerals, iron — an essential nutrient for hundreds of species of phytoplankton that make up the ocean’s food base.   Now scientists at MIT, Columbia University and Florida State University have determined that once iron is deposited in the ocean, it has a very short residence time, spending only six months in surface waters before sinking into the deep ocean. This high turnover of iron signals that large seasonal changes in desert dust may have dramatic

Seas Could Rise 6m Even if Govts Curb Warming -Study

sea level rise," the authors at the Past Global Changes project wrote. Some greenhouse gases can linger for centuries in the atmosphere.   Such a thaw would threaten cities from Beijing to London, and swamp low-lying tropical island states.   Lead author Andrea Dutton, of the University of Florida, said it could take many centuries for a six-metre rise, despite some ancient evidence that more rapid shifts were possible.   "This is a long-term projection. It's not going to happen the day after tomorrow," she told Reuters.   The United Nations' panel of climate

Current, Waves and Turbulence Measurement Workshop

; information in current, waves and turbulence measurement technology are encouraged to attend. Student grants are also available. Additionally, each afternoon will include time slots for exhibitors to offer indoor or on-water demonstrations and training. Arrangements have been made with the University of Florida to accommodate vendors’ dockside and boat needs. The USF is just a short walk from the Hilton. cwtm2015.org

Genetic Yacht Lab Maps Sea Life Looking for Cures

the hopes that unmapped species, some of which have the capacity to reverse disease and injury in themselves, may hold the key to new treatments for humans. Of about 250,000 marine species identified so far, scientists have sequenced the genetic material of only about three dozen, according to University of Florida neuroscientist Leonid Moroz. To speed up the process of making potential new discoveries, a team led by Moroz used a yacht loaded with a fully equipped genomic laboratory to do the sequencing on the ocean in real time. The scientists sequenced 22 organisms during two test runs off Florida's
