Daewoo Shipbuilding Receives African Drillship Order

South Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. (DSME) said it has received an order to build two DSME e-Smart drillships for a combined $1.24 billion.

Under its current schedule, Daewoo Shipbuilding is slated to deliver both vessels to its African customer by the end of 2015, the company said. The shipbuilder did not reveal the contractor’s name.

DMSE said the drillships will be capable of drilling 12Km deep in 3.6Km deep sea, and each ship will house two drill towers and two blowout preventers.

According to multiple sources, Daewoo Shipbuilding is on pace to surpass its 2013 turnover target of $13 billion. The company has received six drill ship orders so far this year in addition to orders for container ships and offshore plants, contributing roughly $11.26 billion toward its 2013 target.
