DOLPHIN: Enabling Technology for Acoustic Systems
DOLPHIN Signal Processing TechnologyAcoustics enable many core undersea capabilities. Where radio waves do not propagate well, and light is absorbed quickly, acoustic signals help us map, see, locate and communicate. The many products and technologies that employ acoustics all depend upon signal processing, thus new processing approaches can impact many applications. QinetiQ North America (QNA) and…

Subsea Mining: The Next Big Thing for UUVs
In Europe, there are sure signs that underwater mining is the next big market for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and new “drones” called HROV, DART or TURTLE. Among the indicators is the involvement of mining companies, governments, rich subsea players and the Dutch dredging community. New vehicles are being developed from Hungary to Hawaii, although Portugal…

Canada's New Observatory Uses 'Seafloor GPS'
A major new seabed observatory that will provide critical information about earthquake and tsunami hazards is to be deployed offshore Vancouver, Canada, using long endurance acoustic sensing technology supplied by Sonardyne International Ltd.The new Northern Cascadia Subduction Zone Observatory (NCSZO) will use a “seafloor GPS” network to monitor long-term movements of the subducting Juan de Fuca plate and overriding North American tectonic plate.

Charles River Analytics Builds AI to Manage Exposure of US Navy USVs
Following successful demonstration of a prototype system, Charles River Analytics was awarded a $600,000 contract from the U.S. Navy to further develop onboard AI for uncrewed surface vehicles (USVs).USVs in shipping lanes or active fishing zones must be visible to prevent collisions. But when in open waters, USVs may need to hide to avoid pirates or vessels from hostile nations. Though the required actions could be controlled by a remote operator…

A Breakthrough in Hybrid Underwater Vehicles
A collaborative effort has produced a new generation in underwater systems, breaking with tradition by uniquely combining several underwater systems into a single platform. The Fusion from U.S. manufacturer Strategic Robotic Systems is a breakthrough in hybrid underwater vehicles, combining AUV and ROV capabilities with diver navigation and propulsion – all in one system. Essential to making this forward…
TE Subcom on the 'Open Cables' Model
TE SubCom’s “Open Cables” is a new business model that allows customers to select preferred Submarine Line Terminating Equipment (SLTE) line card supplier to create an interoperable and complementary dry and wet plant. SubCom will continue to offer and invest in its advanced SLTE product line, in addition to the new Open Cables alternative, to provide customers with ultimate flexibility. The Open Cables…
New Technology Measures Tidal Speeds
The Fundy Ocean Research Center for Energy (FORCE), in partnership with Nortek Scientific, announced the construction of the world’s first instrument to provide high-resolution, real time measurements of turbulent water flow at turbine hub height, called the Vectron. The Vectron is able to capture highly accurate measurements of turbulence at a specific height above the sea over long periods of time, beneficial to understanding turbine performance.

Study: Electrical Properties of Topological Insulators
Scientists at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) have demonstrated for the first time that one can electrically access the remarkable properties predicted for a topological insulator (TI). They used a ferromagnetic metal/tunnel barrier contact as a voltage probe to detect the spin polarization created in the topologically protected surface states when an unpolarized bias current is applied. This…

Fugro to Support Norway’s USV Seabed Mapping Program
Fugro has been awarded a contract by the Norwegian Hydrographic Service (NHS) to support the 2025 MAREANO seabed mapping program. For the first time in its history, MAREANO will use uncrewed surface vessel (USV) technology to acquire the data, with Fugro deploying its new 18-meter Blue Eclipse USV for the initiative. The approach aims to advance the move towards lower carbon emissions in seabed mapping…

Shipwrecks Teem with Underwater Life, from Microbes to Sharks
Humans have sailed the world’s oceans for thousands of years, but they haven’t all reached port. Researchers estimate that there are some three million shipwrecks worldwide, resting in shallow rivers and bays, coastal waters and the deep ocean. Many sank during catastrophes – some during storms or after running aground, others in battle or collisions with other vessels.Shipwrecks like the RMS Titanic…
