Ancient Relics Found in Subsea Pipeline Route

Underwater archaeologists have been scouring the seabed where a gas pipeline is being built off Israel's coast in a bid to preserve relics near a 5,000-year-old port which once was a key trade hub for the Mediterranean's ancient civilizations. The pipeline from the deep-sea Leviathan gas field that is due to begin production late next year comes ashore near Dor Beach in northern Israel, a popular spot among Israeli sunbathers. It is also the site of the ancient port of Dor, where hidden in the seabed lie the vestiges of marine traders throughout the ages - from the Phoenicians to the Romans.

Case Study: Klein System 5900 Side Scan Sonar

Klein Marine System’s flagship 5900 high-resolution and high-speed side scan sonar is designed for use as either a conventional towed system or a payload for an unmanned surface vehicle (USV). Klein recently tested its newest sonar features in Israel on the USV Seagull, Elbit’s versatile platform for mine hunting and antisubmarine warfare. Among these features is the ability to control and stream full-resolution side scan sonar images via satellite.During a recent test, the Klein 5900 made several passages over the wreck of the Italian Submarine Scirè, sunk by the British naval

Researchers Study Hull Biofouling and Spread of Invasive Species

is contributing to the spread of invasive aquatic species in the Mediterranean Sea – a phenomenon commonly associated with ship ballasting operations. According to recent research published by Tel Aviv University’s School of Zoology, half the ships passing along the Mediterranean coast of Israel are carrying invasive ascidians, presenting a global threat to ecosystems around the world. TAU’s Dr. Noa Shenkar, who led the research, said, “These organisms are passing through the Suez Canal, latching onto ropes and the bottom of the ship. They're filter feeders, so they cover
