Fugro Opens Expanded Soils Testing Facility

Today marks the official opening of Fugro’s expanded soils testing laboratory at the Group’s U.K. headquarters in Wallingford, Oxfordshire, by The Mayor of Wallingford, Councillor Bernard Stone. An investment of over £1 million has been made in increasing the capacity and in state-of-the-art equipment, as a direct result of the significant increase in the number of samples being taken from offshore wind developments, coupled with Fugro’s existing work in the buoyant global offshore oil and gas industry.

The floor space of the laboratory has been increased by 50%, new equipment includes; 12 Computer controlled Stress Path Triaxial systems, four Cyclic Simple Shear systems, four Cyclic Triaxial systems, 10 High Pressure Incremental Oedometer systems and two Resonant Column systems. The number of Fugro laboratory technicians has already been increased by 25% with plans for further employment opportunities. The new facilities now increase the output of the laboratory by 50%.

In the last ten years Fugro has been active in preliminary and detailed soil investigations for offshore wind development in the North Sea and Baltic Sea, and more recently in United States waters, performing more than 50 preliminary geotechnical investigations and more than 25 detailed investigations in accordance with German BSH regulations. In the offshore oil and gas industry Fugro soil investigation activity has a long record with the group’s expertise used in the waters off every continent in the world.
