This September OSIL staff flew out to Shanghai, China to attend the new Oceanology International trade show and conference. Arriving at the show on Monday to set up the stand the venue was already a hub of activity as numerous suppliers from across the world began setting up their stands. The OSIL team collected the stand graphics and equipment, including a Guildline Portasal, which had been shipped out prior to the event. Having attended the show as part of a group of traders put together by the Society of Maritime Industries the stand was situated amongst other traders from around the U.K.

On Tuesday morning the trade show got off to an exceptionally busy start as the OSIL stand was flooded with visitors keen to learn about OSIL and their products. The volume of visitors evened off as the week progressed although the show remained busy with visitors from across China and Asia until the close of the show on Thursday.

Visitors showed an exceptional level of interest in OSIL products including the large range of customizable data buoys and extensive range of sediment corers and grabs, along with the high accuracy Guildline range of salinometers.

The products of greatest interest by far was the range of IAPSO Seawater Standards, which are used with high accuracy salinometers (such as the Guildline Portasal and Autosal) as a very important part of the analysis process of seawater samples. IAPSO seawater standards are the only international recognized standard for work in high accuracy salinity measurement. IAPSO seawater standards are run through the salinometer before, during and at the end of a sample run to standardize the salinometer so as to limit any uncertainty in the data samples the user has measured.

OSIL felt that it was important to attend the show in order to consolidate and expand their existing presence in China. The Show provided a potential launch pad for OSIL’s continued success in China and was important to OSIL’s expansion plans into the developing world as currently 90% of OSIL’s business comes from abroad.

The show also offered the opportunity to meet with existing customers and agencies in China who were attending the show. After the conclusion of the show OSIL staff travelled across China to meet with clients and distributors and maintain their good relationship.
